The Acolyte 1x08 * FULL LENGTH REACTION

We've got a lot of information to digest from this episode!

First of all, Master Venestra has a lot more going on. Covering everything up and blaming Sol? She's the one who gave the lashings to Qimir, and it feels like she's up to no good. I'm not sure if she's really on the Jedi's side, it seems like ulterior motives are at play.

It's a bit weird that Mae was just memory wiped, I was hoping that Osha and Mae would merge and get a power up of some kind.

All in all, they did a great job wrapping up the story and leaving it open for more seasons. I'm not sure if it will be renewed, but we will see.

So far it's my least favourite live action Star Wars TV show, though I still have Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka left to watch. The one that I'm most worried about is Book of Boba Fett because... I'm not really sure why he has a TV series 🤣

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Next, we start... REBELS!!!

The Acolyte 1x08 * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Some of the criticism is understandable, but at the same time, having started my Star Wars journey very recently, I've seen so much negativity around every piece of Star Wars media I've watched, so it just feels like that's just what a lot of Star Wars do (hate on Star Wars 😅) If they don't continue with the live action, I do hope they/someone can write a novel with the continuation, I would read that for sure!

I liked Acolyte, but I understand the criticism tbh. I'm interested in how much of a role Plagueis will play since we only saw him for like a few seconds in the cave this season. Looking forward to your Rebels journey.

Thoughts about the show itself and not just a jedi bad rant. I'm pretty sure that guy creeping in the cave was Darth Plagus(sp) he looks like other depictions of him from novel covers and such. Qimir looked surprised when Sol said Osha and Mae were the same person. I wonder if this is how DP learned about this kind of force power. IDK what Vernestra is up to. From what I understand she was the protagonist of the High Republic novels and was a good person. I'm thinking that whatever happened between her and Qimir is what led her on a path of compounding lies. Lying about Qimir, Lying about the coven massacre, Lying about Sol. I hope they do a season 2. I would really like to see them pay off on things they have set up. How are things going to go down with Qimir and Osha? Isn't he worried about the rule of 2? Maybe Qimir doesn't even know DP is there. I would go on but I'm pretty tired, think I'll go home now.

I really liked this show because it vindicates a bunch of stuff I've been saying for years. The Jedi are DEEPLY flawed. Obi-Wan and Yoda lied to Luke so they could send him on a mission to kill his father. The Council were terrible to young Anakin. I mean they handled the whole situation so poorly that he turned to evil. All Anakin wanted to do was save Padme and Palpatine was the only person who offered to help. When Anakin confided in Yoda he basically told him to just get over it. The Council hid information that could hurt them politically. Concealing the fact that they had lost their ability feel the force enough to sense that Palpatine was a Sith. The Jedi take children and use them as child soldiers. I think the main reason Luke didn't turn evil was because he could sense the good in Vader. If he hadn't sensed that then he either would have been killed or joined the Emperor. A bunch of stuff in The Clone Wars tv show that I wont go into for the sake of brevity. Warcrimes, cover ups, and more.

That's when I'll be watching it :) This is the order that I have: Rebels Mandalorian S1, S2 Book of Boba Fett Mandalorian S3 Ahsoka

I do think the lack of emotional connection is one of the biggest downfalls for this show. The only character that has a chance for me to care about is Qimir. I haven't seen him enough to be super invested, but he's the only character that I am somewhat invested in. One of my issues with a lot of acting is the lack of blinking. It seems like there's a wave of acting where actors don't blink on screen and it really bothers me. I think it's suppose to give an "intensity" to the character, which always falls flat to me. Despite the clunky aspects of the series, I still liked seeing what they came up with. I really enjoyed some/most of the combat, especially when Qimir was involved. I think them not answering your questions isn't necessarily a bad thing (though I don't know what your questions are). I know some movies/shows purposely don't answer everything so you can make connections on your own. I think for Star Wars that's very likely the case since there is a lot more lore that's already been provided in previous material.

If you're going to continue with the Star Wars TV shows, you should be aware that The Book of Boba Fett is really just Season 2.5 of The Mandalorian and should be watched between Season 2 and Season 3 of that show.

So now that this season of The Acolyte is over, I can carry on from my thoughts and comments on the more objective/technical aspects of the show, which I had first made on the Episode 3 post. Unfortunately nothing in the remaining episodes made me change my mind; it all remained oh so very “clunky” throughout. Subjectively and personally speaking, there are a couple things a movie or TV show can do in order for me to like/enjoy it. First and foremost, I need levels of emotional connection; I have to feel something for the characters and the story they are part of. Then if it can also engage me intellectually, it will probably end up in my top tier list. But the “feel” part turned out to be not much of anything, beyond apathy and some disappointment. Many shows and movies can get by on things like thin plots and dumb story conveniences if it has great characters and/or emotional beats. But in the absence of emotional connection, my logical brain starts activating, and that’s a bad thing for this show because I start noticing A LOT of those “clunky” issues. Anyone who has any experience with very young kids will know there is a phase where the kid will ask “why?” to everything over and over. And you’ll answer as best you can, until the 100th time when, through ignorance of the answer or sheer exasperation, you answer with “just because”. Unfortunately, when my logical brain kicked in, it began asking a million “why” questions (why did the character do or say this?, why did that happen? and so on…). It seemed like the creatives of this show hardly ever bothered with an answer to my questions, instead going straight to “just because”. Which ultimately left me feeling a bit like they were insulting my intelligence (never a good thing for your audience to say). I think there was a lot of potential with this show and many of the concepts they wanted to explore, but to me it became a wasted opportunity, as you can’t make a feature length movie or multiple episode show on concepts alone. Conceptual filmmaking is where short films thrive (see the stuff made by Verowak or her peers for example; or for a Star Wars example, watch Visions); otherwise you need to fully flesh out the characters and their motivations, and/or provide a solid story with emotional beats, to engage this particular audience member. Upwards and onwards to the shows that are succeeding for me (HotD, The Bear, Shogun, etc.)!

Omg finally this insult to Star Wars is over!!! Pumped to see you start the (compared to this sh*te) great shows now.
