Independence Day (1996) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Thanks to our June Marble winner, Kelvar J. for this request!

As you may know, I'm not a big Will Smith fan, but I'm glad that this movie has more than one main character! The fact that Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman have their own storylines that converge helps a lot.

I still need to see Will Smith in a serious role lol

The movie was not at all what I expected. I was expecting an action movie more than anything.... and this was not that. Jeff Goldblum is a joy to watch, especially his scenes with his father. They were so heartwarming to see interact together.

Now that I think of it, all of the relationships (friend, romantic, family, etc) were well done!

Also, the fact that we literally had the hero of Canton in this movie, just makes it that much better 🤣 I'm still a bit miffed that it took me so long to recognize him.

It's definitely a fun movie, and the most important character survived (Boomer) 🥰

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Independence Day (1996) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

"Harry and the Hendersons" (1987) w/ John Lithgow, Kevin Peter Hall

JAKH

Ian McDiarmid: "Sleepy Hollow" (1999) - good for an October watch, also w/ Christopher Lee and Ray Park

JAKH

There's not a lot but def 80s and 90s there's a slew, the ones I mentioned are lesser known but classics, then there is the typical lampoon's vacation and European vacation with Chevy chase. Weekend at bernie's is a notable mention. All goofy comedies.

Bubba Fett

I didn't know Michael Bay did "Bad Boys"... I guess it makes sense since the poster that I've seen has an explosion 😂

Verowak

I didn't know summer vacation type movies were a thing! I mean, it makes sense, but I can only picture kid movies 🤔

Verowak

Yes but the tail end of her quote, "go in pieces" completed the entire line from lundgrens scene in dark angel, that's what I was referring to.

Bubba Fett

"I come in peace" was originally from the 1951 sci-fi classic "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (also the source of "Klaatu Barada Nikto"). "We come in peace" was also used a lot by Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek and parodied in the song "Star Trekkin" by The Firm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCARADb9asE

JAKH

Will Smith's best serious role performance by a big margin IMO: "Concussion" (2015) *True Story* For action roles, I always liked the first 2 "Bad Boys" movies (1995, 2003) both directed by Michael Bay. The third one: meh.

JAKH

Saw this in IMAX it kinda started a trend of big effects, was a blast. Lol. Good August theme might be summer vacation type movies, couple of john candy classics id suggest, summer rental and the great outdoors. I come in peace is a quote. Dolph lundgren hidden gem, some releases it's called dark angel others it's called I come in peace and your line is stated almost verbatim.

Bubba Fett

Thanks for that! Quite a few that are on my list actually :D

Verowak

Thank you!! It's definitely best to ignore a lot of the technology in movies 🤣

Verowak

Very wide range of movies, that's very impressive

Verowak

Stargate music didn't stand out to me I don't think 🤔

Verowak

I keep seeing Enemy of the State being mentioned!

Verowak

STARGATE!!! That's right!!! Thank you :D I feel like this isn't the first movie that you've seen sections of haha Is this a normal occurrence for you? 😁 Boomer best boy for sure! Imagine all the treats and pets he got

Verowak

Not being from the US, even if I was an adult and paying attention to politics at that time, I would not have been paying attention to US politics 🤣 And I haven't seen Star Trek (aside from a few Voyager episodes), so whoever that was went by completely unnoticed for sure! Ian McDiarmid is an actor that I want to see in a non-Star Wars movie. I think he was GREAT as Palpatine, not as Darth Sidious Thanks for choosing this, it was fun!!

Verowak

🤣🤣🤣thank you for that, I will steer clear of it!

Verowak

I didn't know Will Smith did many serious movies, but it's good to hear!!

Verowak

I need to watch that movie, along with "I Am Legend" so I can finally know the differences lol

Verowak

The very reason why I say the runtime since some movies have extended cuts, and some don't, and I never know which ones do. Usually the versions on streaming services are theatrical cut (which is where I watch the movies unless it's from my local library)

Verowak

Thanks, I think I'll tackle one of his more serious roles. Hopefully I'm more of a fan of him like that lol

Verowak

As an I.T Professional for 25 years, there is so much wrong with the end of this film. I will not go into it as it would be boring. It is still a great film and a brilliant reaction Verowak

William

You asked for suggestions for other disaster movies: "Deepwater Horizon" (2016) directed by Peter Berg. *True Story* "The Perfect Storm" (2000) directed by Wolfgang Petersen. *True Story* "The Towering inferno" (1974) music by John Williams "Dante's Peak" (1997) "Volcano" (1997) music by Alan Silvestri "Battle: Los Angeles" (2011) "San Andreas" (2015) "The Abyss Special Edition" (1998) directed by James Cameron. music by Alan Silvestri "Godzilla" (1998 version) Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich. music by David Arnold "Gray Lady Down" (1978) "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972 original) music by John Williams "Rampage" (2018) "Mars Attacks" (1994) directed by Tim Burton. Music by Danny Elfman "War of the Worlds" (2005) directed by Steven Spielberg. music by John Williams "Daylight" (1996) "Outbreak" (1995) directed by Wolfgang Petersen "Earthquake" (1974) music by John Williams "Poseidon" (2006 remake) directed by Wolfgang Petersen

JAKH

The music might have sounded familiar to you because composer David Arnold also did "Stargate" and the scores have similar musical themes.

JAKH

Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich (and his wife Ute Emmerich) had a steady series of successes on a regular schedule in the 1990's culminating with "The Patriot" in 2000, followed by a whole lot of of stinkers ever since: "Universal Soldier" (1992) sci-fi action "Stargate" (1994) you already watched "Independence Day" (1996) "Godzilla" (1998 version) light-hearted sci-fi action "The Patriot" (2000) AWI fictional action/drama every 2 years like clockwork

JAKH

I really liked Will Smith in Enemy of the State. Good movie. Saw Independence Day at the theater. It was a really big deal at the time.

Carl Evans

I just realized @Verowak says the runtime right before starting the movie: it is the theatrical cut.

Rob Frawley 2nd

Roland Emmerich sounds familiar because in addition to Moonfall he also directed another movie you've reacted to before: Stargate 😄 Wow those aliens were OP but yes Boomer is definitely the MVP for sure - what a good boy! So it turns out I've actually seen this movie before but not all in one sitting. I remember seeing it in random chunks whenever it was on tv e.g. the first attack from the ships with Boomer running in the subway, the alien dissection scene, and the president's speech at the end, but never fully twigged that it was all the same movie haha! It's nice to finally see the full thing. Thanks to our marble winner KelvarJ for picking it, and thanks Vero for sharing the experience with us 😄

Biggsy

Glad you liked this. Normally alien invasion movies are really, really badly done and not the kind of movie I would watch. But I looked at the cast list and figured it could be decent so I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. The level of detail and production quality was really well done imo. Some things you may not have noticed since the movie dates back to 90's. The TV political talking heads on the President's TV for example were real commentators from the time and they played themselves and the way they did their show. Dr. Oaken the mad scientist at Area 51 was played by Brent Spiner of Star Trek the Next Generation (I did not sense that you recognized him, I am forgetting if you watched any of the series) I am adding Will Smith to the list of actors I like and you have issues with. Recalling Ian McDiarmid (your best bud Palpatine) Normally we agree on who to like and to not like so it's interesting when it diverges a little. The sequel, while not horrible is very skippable and forgettable imo. Thanks for watching this, was an enjoyable 2 hours.

For the love of anything holy Miss Verowak, do not watch Independence Day Resurgent, it is dribbling botty gravy from start to finish

Andrew Jackson

Cheesy action/disaster movies with good characters like this one are always great fun. It’s a tricky balance to get right though; many other attempts to capture the same end up failing. While I have no issues with Will Smith’s forms of comedic acting, can definitely understand if others do; it’s very subjective. My favourite primarily dramatic roles of his would be: Ali (2001) The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) King Richard (2021) Others in the comments mentioned “Enemy of the State”, “I Am Legend”, and “I, Robot” which I agree are also very good. Very honourable mention to “Six Degrees of Separation (1993)”, a very unique film which is one of Will Smith’s first movie roles, alongside the great Sir Ian McKellan (yes Gandalf himself), and the recently passed away legendary Canadian, Donald Sutherland.

Laxjedi

I, Robot is a mostly serious role for Will Smith. At least, I remember it being that way anyway, lol.

OrangeLion

Can you confirm if this is the theatrical or extended version of the film (145 vs 153-minute runtime)? Also, if you are looking for "serious" Will Smith roles, I recommend adding any of the following movies to some upcoming polls: - The Pursuit of Happyness (2006): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pursuit_of_Happyness - King Richard (2021): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Richard_(film) - Ali (2001): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_(film) - I Am Legend (2007): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Legend_(film)

I was always a bit iffy about Will Smith myself. Don't find him funny enough to hold a film up by himself and can't take him too seriously either. The first two 'Bad Boys' films were good as far as I can remember.. and MIB 1+3 were a good laugh (imo). For more serious films I'd go with 'I am Legend' and 'Enemy Of The State'. Again, been a while so they might not hold up.. but might be worth looking into.
