The Last Duel (2021) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!!

I will start off by saying that this movie is one where you can rewatch it and you'll pick up on more the second time around. Just skimming through the movie to double check a few things, and I noticed just how great it is!

I don't remember if I mentioned it, but when Jean and Jacques make peace at Crespin's.. baby thing? I first thought that Jean said that "... there will be no ill will..." but in the next chapter that wasn't the case, so I doubted myself. BUT it turns out that he CLAIMS that he said it!!

I love the narrative style of this movie. I just want to watch it again to pick apart the differences in each chapter!

Adam Driver is good at being despicable but in a subtle way. Really great acting from everyone (ignoring some accents since it's a minor thing, the storytelling is so much more important!), and I just love how they got to play slightly different characters in the different chapters!!

I appreciate this movie a lot more after having thought about it. It's actually pretty damn amazing.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

The Last Duel (2021) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Ahh! I didn't pick up on that from Carrouges' initial reaction, but it makes sense, sadly. The dialogue throughout the movie is all amazing, especially when we can spot the differences between the chapters. Jodie Comer does amazing in her delivery

As we see in "The Last Duel", a woman's standing in society revolved around the men in their lives. The 'true story' chapter of the film shows that de Carrouges' initial reaction of hearing what Le Gris had perpetrated against Marguerite was 'how could he do this to ME!' His contempt for Le Gris clouded his judgment to the point where the only thing that mattered to him just prior to the duel was that he exact revenge and that the potential of a failed outcome and the tortuous death of his wife was not a concern. As for Le Gris, his rationalization for the rape is that he considered his actions to be pure because they were borne out of love is a sick delusion - his assault was using force to dominate a physically weaker person to submit to something that will hurt them both physically and emotionally. I didn't know about the rape in the story before I watched the movie and found the scenes very disturbing. I thought the written dialogue for Jodie Comer's character chastising de Carrouges for putting her in mortal danger was excellent.

Definitely planning on one of his films when I have time lol

That's a combination that I was not expecting. Ridley Scott has always been associated with epic movies, and I've not heard much about "House of Gucci". I'm curious to see it now lol

I think having Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in a medieval times may be something that turned people away. I'm glad that this storytelling style is rarely used, I think we would get tired of it quickly (especially since it's hard to do well)

Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci" was released the same year as "The Last Duel", also starring Adam Driver.

Was sad to hear about his passing. Such an amazing actor with an incredible list of films he was in.

At the end, I think Matt Damon should've said, "How do ya like THEM apples?"

Donald Sutherland just passed away today. Maybe watch one of his films in his honor. Here are some of his best IMO (ranked). Most of these have stacked casts: "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) "Backdraft" (1991) directed by Ron Howard. Music by Hans Zimmer "The Italian Job" (2003 remake) "Space Cowboys" (2000) directed by Clint Eastwood "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (1992 original movie) "The Eagle Has Landed" (1976) "Hollowpoint" (1996) "Outbreak" (1995) "Start the Revolution Without Me" (1970)

This is such an under viewed movie, but definitely rated high by those who have seen it. Was one of the few who saw it in theatres around the time Covid restrictions had started to wane, and was really drawn into this methodology of storytelling that is rarely used (and sometimes not used well… ahem β€œThe Acolyte” πŸ˜’). You are right on the money that further viewings allows you to notice a lot more that’s going on!
