The Acolyte 1x03 * FULL LENGTH REACTION

FLASHBACK TIME!!

I think this episode was a great addition to the story. It clears things up, and also give us more information about the girls, and possibly what we can expect in the future.

I think the Witches (Mother Koril and Mother.. mother) showed me the best acting of the series, they felt natural! Though I really thought only the males had the horns, like Darth Maul, so I'm unsure of what exactly is going on.

To me, this is also a backstory on the Darth Maul species and the Witches, which is really fun to have. I'm hoping we do get to see them more in this series.

I'm trying not to compare or read too much into things, but it feels like there are a lot of similarities with existing Star Wars content. Child(ren) born without a father, like Anakin. Sol is like the Qui-Gon of that time... which might be like "what happens to Osha could be what would have happened to Anakin had Qui-Gon been able to train him" type of thing. I'm reaching with this, but that's one of the comparisons that is hard not to make at the moment.

This is my favourite episode of the series so far 😁

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Ahh, thank you! I definitely remember seeing all the males had horns, but we didn't see any female Zabraks when we were on Dathomir. I also don't remember seeing horned female Zabraks so there's that 🤣

Yes they’re doing the “mystery box” and “from a certain point of view” methods of storytelling I mentioned; just not doing it very well. So I expect we’ll get to see other points of view and revelations to the mystery in further episodes. While I’m a big Star Wars fan for most things, I’m not a superfan who gets heavily into all the deep lore and extended universe stuff (at least not for the last 20-25 years); so it doesn’t bother me at all if there is anything introduced that may slightly go against previously established “canon” (ugh that term can be so overused). I’m also avoiding those “hit pieces” you mentioned as many will either be about “breaking the lore”, or agendas (or a combination of both). No thanks.

You’ve summed up my overall feelings in a more analytical and concise way than I could manage.

In reference to your question about why Mother Koril has horns: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Zabrak I looked it up as I originally thought the same as you (that females didn’t have the horns); like yourself, I’m mostly only aware of stuff I’ve seen in the movies and shows. Apparently the females that migrated to Dathomir don’t have them anymore, but the ones on their original home planet do. And I forgot that there was a horned female Zabrak bounty hunter in a couple Clone Wars episodes, so I guess now we know!

I’m a bit confused. My YT feed has been full of various hit pieces for this episode but I didn’t watch any of them so had no clue what the issue was. I thought after watching I’d know, but I’m still none the wiser. If I had to guess, I’d go with either some lore issue or the weird fire event. I’m a very casual Star Wars fan and like what I like and am not really bothered about the other stuff. I love ep3, 4, 5 & 6, Rogue One and…that’s probably it. Oh and almost all Obi-Wan scenes in his show. I have no knowledge or interest in any lore, nor any interest in seasons and seasons of animated shows. I don’t hate any of it, I just don’t care. As a result I’m probably not going to get worked up about the state of the franchise, whatever that happens to be. Having rather unnecessarily said all that, this episode seemed fine to me, except for the fire, I too want to know what we’re missing. If we’re not missing anything, and that’s just what happened then they did an appalling job in the execution of showing us. There has to be more to it, right? I have no clue where it’s going or what I actually want from the show, but it’s short enough for me to keep watching to find out…probably.

If there is one word I would use to objectively describe this show so far, it’s “clunky”. Clunky writing overall (poor plotting and dialogue, too much reliance on direct exposition and plot conveniences, the “abnormally stupid/unintelligent” character/faction tropes used in order to elevate another character/faction), clunky directing, clunky action & fight scenes, some clunky acting (which many times can be attributed to the aforementioned clunky dialogue and directing), clunky production decisions (see below), etc., etc. Insert “awkward”, “clumsy”, or “uninspired” as your adjective if you prefer. I’ve watched enough shows and movies in my time to understand what they are trying to do with the production and episode layouts. The problem is that if you are going to do “slow burn” (which I normally love), “mystery box”, or “from a certain point of view” type writing and production/presentation, there have to be some major hooks elsewhere within the introduction and setup aspects; I’m just not seeing anything like that in these first three episodes. I’m not interested or all that invested in most of the characters, nor the way they are laying out the plot, and that’s a bad thing this far into an 8 episode show. Some of the things I like (or at least, am fine with so far) are the costuming (great), set designs (really good), the acting performances from Master Sol (Lee Jung Jae) and Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith), and that this period/setting of the Star Wars universe is something new and unfamiliar to me. I will admit to a modicum of intrigue around where all of this is going; however the manner in how they get there, and the payoff for it, will have to be huge to make up for all the other issues that have come so far.
