The Acolyte 1x01 * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Starting a new Star Wars series!!!!

We are all on the same page here... isn't that strange 🤣

Tomorrow will be another episode of the Acolyte since they were both released at the same time.

So starting off, we know this takes place 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace! We have new characters obviously (and I'm hoping we get to see a certain green Jedi Master since he'd be 700 something years old).

It seems that the writers for this series are not the same as Andor, or any of the animated series that I've seen. I haven't been drawn into any of the characters yet, but there is still time! Also, based on the poster for this series, I was expecting it to be dark and gritty... but I'm not so sure after this episode. A lightsaber with blood had me wanting to watch this 🤣

I'm very curious to know what you guys think about this episode!

It was nice to see Trinity, also 😁 "Dodge this!" (I wish that was one of her lines!)

So far the episode does not do a "show don't tell", instead it "tells" us things that should instead be shown to us.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Rue?! Oh wow, good eye! I definitely didn't recognize her whatsoever 😁 I think it's very hard to not have any familiar character to rely on, but at the same time, I'm glad that they aren't relying on them. It's good to see a time other than what we're used to. I forgot about the random shirtless scene.. why was that needed?! 🤣 I think aside from Princess Leia in a bikini, this is the only other time we see any kind of sex appeal (since Anakin and Padme together definitely was not sexy in the prequels 🤣) I'm on the same lines as you... apprehensive, and with tropes that are... not good and cheapens a story for me. Hopefully it's just a rocky start, and it gets more interesting and less... forced 😏

It definitely will not be my favourite Star Wars live action show. That is Andor all the way! I agree with you, the series is not great, not terrible 🤣

It's great to be able to share this new adventure with you 😄 So I thought the actor playing Osha looked familiar so I googled and it turns out she was Rue in the Hunger Games! Thankfully this has a lot better camerawork so far haha. It's nice to see some new Star Wars story lines and time periods, and that they've not overly relied on the familiar names like Yoda who would be alive at this point in history. It's great to see the force being used more too with the lightsabers seeming to be a weapon of last resort! At least until Yord just flips it on immediately right at the end there... That, the random shirtless scene, and the point you highlighted about telling not showing means I'm not liking Yord much at the moment. Hopefully Sol brings some balance and character development to him asap. The "oh it was actually your evil twin" trope is lazy and I'm not at all interested in it to be honest especially as it flip-flopped immediately from "I saw her die" to "she's alive" in literally back-to-back scenes. You mentioning the call-back to his eyes being deceitful may have been the point of that exchange ... but it just felt rushed. I'm apprehensive but trying to keep an open mind this early into the series!

I don't think this show will be great, but I don't think it will be bottom tier either. Some nice moments here and there.

Yord seems like an overconfident Jedi, not very experienced. Which is fine, it gives room for character growth, which is always great to see in a series. As for not accompanying the prisoner... I'm telling myself that it's things like this that made the Jedi change the way they do things. Like those warning labels that seem so obvious... they are there because it wasn't obvious to someone else and they got injured or died because of it. But I don't know of any lore during this time, so I don't really have anything to go by, just what I can piece together based on what they show us. I do wish that they kept us guessing if Osha actually did it or not a bit longer, but I'll have to wait to see the whole season to see if it makes more sense (maybe there aren't many episodes and there are other conflicts/moments that are just so much more important to this). I do tend to change my mind or see things from a different perspective once I watched the whole season :D

Verowak

That's very true! It does have the chance to stand completely on its own with no fan service. Just because Yoda is part of the Jedi order, it doesn't mean we'll ever see him, he's probably busy with his own things.

Overall I thought the episode was ok, I didn’t hate it. Consistency of force use and how it’s handled will be interesting to see. I feel Yord is being set up as the dumb not funny comic relief, but I hope I’m wrong about that. I’m not a creative person so I could not do any better myself but the “let’s put the Jedi murdering suspect on a transport ship with the worst security possible and not accompany it/her” felt a bit lazy. Characters make stupid decisions all the time in movies and shows so I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on this one. The intrigue they built up regarding Osha and the fact she seemed unlikely to have committed the murder despite us seeing her do it, which I was very much into, was resolved within the first 30 minutes of the show, that was disappointing. Oh and “I saw her die”…a few seconds later…”I believe you” LOL Let’s see what the next intrigue will be.

This will be a different experience to actually watch a Star Wars title with you as it is coming out. To expand on your point about this series having a completely different creative team and set of characters, I am very happy with the fact that we finally have a Star Wars title which is far removed from everything else. With a big universe like this, there is potential to tell stories from across a big timeline, but almost all titles take place either during one of the trilogies or between trilogies. And even though it would be cool to see familiar characters drop in, I think not having the ability to do rely on familiarity forces the writers to ensure their story stands strong on its own

I thought of the same moment during the cave scene on Carlac, it felt very similar in image and in narrative to the scene with Anakin and Ahsoka on Coruscant.

In terms of these characters, I really like Sol. He reminds me of Qui Gon. We have seen Carlac before, it was in Clone Wars Season 4 Episode 14 when we first saw Bo Katan when Ahsoka was helping Lux. The scene on Carlac with Sol, Yord, and Osha reminded me of the moment with Ahsoka and Anakin in Clone Wars Season 5 Episode 18 when they were in the tunnels. I honestly am really liking the relationship between Osha and Sol and how the actress, Amandla Stenberg, is able to portray both Osha and Mae. Yord is kinda interesting because he's like an example of how the Jedi are changing with how many times he ignites his lightsaber, similar to the Jedi during the Prequel trilogy.
