John Carter (2012) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This movie reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!

Well, well, well...

This movie has the magic formula to make it so fun! It's not an award winning kind of movie, but it's fantastic!!

Maybe I just happen to be in the perfect mood for this kind of movie, but I'm glad that I saw it. Woola is just adorable, and would be amazing to have and play fetch with.

It feels like a typical story once they're on Barsoom, but I have to say the ending was chef's kiss

It did feel like Star Wars at times, but then again, the whole "befriend alien race who will then help out in the conflict that's going on on the planet" isn't specific to Star Wars, but it's so well known, it's easy to just think of it.

There must be a movie made in the 70s/80s where the title is the character's name, and it's sci-fi/set on another planet 🤔

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are awesome and make this possible 🥰

It really is! The right amount of everything

Verowak

Really fun movie.

Horoldo

The author is Edgar Rice Burroughs. He wrote some famous books like Tarzan of the Apes (you know, later spoofed by George of the Jungle). These are series of books "John Carter of Mars," adventures on the red planet. From 1912 before much was known about Mars. Later I think they just left out the "Mars" part of the title... because it can be any planet. They are adventure stories, old style, very imaginative.

My older brother would often hand me a book to read. I be like "Surely, but is this any good?" And he would say "Oh yea it is, but don't call me Shirley."

Mannygogou

It was surprisingly fun! I'm curious to read the books to see how it continues

Verowak

I always liked this movie... although I don't remember much 🙂 But I did read the books long ago.

Mannygogou

Maybe I'll have to do a Shakespeare month at some point 🤔

Verowak

Lynn Collins is also great in the Al Pacino version of Shakespear’s Merchant of Venice.

This is also when Disney bought LucasFilm, getting them both Star Wars and Indiana Jones in addition to the MCU.

Not just Star Wars, Avatar, and Superman, but also: - Flash Gordon - Buck Rodgers - Frank Herbert's "Dune" - The D&D "Dark Sun" campaign setting - Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles" - DC Comics' character Jon Jons, the (green) Martian Manhunter - David Weber & John Ringo's "Empire of Man"/"Prince Roger" series - The super-strong Imperial humans in David Weber's "Dahak" series - Harry Turtledove's "Misplaced Legion" in the "Videssos" series - Easter Egg references to early colonists on Mars as "John Carter" in "Babylon 5", "Total Recall", and "The Expanse" - Robert Heinlein named characters after them: Zebadiah John Carter & his wife D. T. "Deety" Burroughs Carter

JAKH

Ah, true! I remember a variation of that from an Eminem song 🤣

the "making of" video focusing on the history of the Barsoom series and it's influence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ighlz-IZNTU

When Superman first appeared, he didn't fly, he jumped using his enhanced strength: "Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound".

Taylor Kitsch played Gambit/Remy LeBeau in "Origins Wolverine" and the real life MoH awardee Lt Mike Murphy in the true story "Lone Survivor" from director Peter Berg. For a Canadian he does American Southern accents pretty well. BTW, the British actors and crew didn't realize that Lynn Collins was American until the 3rd day of filming the Helium City scenes.

JAKH

The novel being published in 1912 most likely had a LOT of influence on a lot of content we have seen, but sadly, that's not what people will see it. It influencing Star Wars, and Star Wars being done as a movie first, just means it will always be compared to Star Wars, when it should be the other way around lol. I saw in the IMDB trivia that this was his first live action, and though I've never directed animated films, I bet it was a huge change in directing.

Verowak

Oh that really unfortunate! Horrible timing for this movie then it seems :(

Verowak

I do try to find good things about all movies, and have fun with them. I'm glad you liked the Star Wars inserts 🤣 It does suck when actors get bad luck with roles. It's pretty amazing that he got the lead role, but unfortunate that it didn't do well, because a lot of times it reflects bad on the actor when a lot of times, it shouldn't. I don't think I've seen Taylor Kitsch in anything else... if I did, then it wasn't memorable 😅

Verowak

Disney originally intended this to be a big franchise, but during production, they bought Marvel. So when this was done, they canceled practically all promotion, resulting in its bombing.

I first read A Princess of Mars, which is the basis for this movie, around 1969, and I've loved it ever since. There have been a half a dozen cheap productions of this movie, and I've longed for decades for a decent production, which I think this is. The book was published in 1912, so it not only predated Avatar and Star Wars, but Superman and all superheroes too. By the way, Andrew Stanton directed this. He is the director of Finding Nemo and Wall-E. I think this was his first live movie. Most of those working on it came from Pixar.

Wesley Allison

Turns out I remembered almost nothing from this movie, apart from a pretty lady with amazing…er…eyes. I didn’t particularly enjoy the first half, although Vero going hard on the Star Wars drinking game early on was entertaining. I found Virginia a fairly irritating character but eventually settled into it and I found the third act certainly enjoyable. The ‘hostage’ scene in particular made me chuckle. Always nice to see some Brits in action - oh look villains, who’d have thunk it. I’m not a huge fan of Taylor Kitsch but he probably did what he could with the script. I think I’ve only seen him in one other movie and that tanked too, but I’m not saying he is to blame, it was all Rihanna’s fault - only joking 😁 Anywho, far too long but eventually an enjoyable spectacle and a fun time had.

I'm glad to hear you were pleasantly surprised!! It's just an overall fun movie :D

Verowak

I hope you enjoy the rewatch!!! :D

Verowak

I expected nothing going into that film the first time i seen it and like yourself, I was pleasantly surprised.

jim Howe

If I remember correctly this movie got slated by critics at release, but I’m pretty sure I had a fun time with it. I’m excited for a rewatch
