Apollo 13 (1995) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Space... the final frontier 🤣

The original plan was to have this reaction last month, but then I got sick and wasn't able to edit it. So here it is a month later 😅

All the events that happened feel like a made up story for a movie, but that's not the case! This movie is a great example that shows sometimes things just work out and is also shows how amazing people can be. I realized that I quite enjoy stressful movies, I'll have to check more out soon.

Amazing job by everyone in this. At no point did I feel like I was watching a movie, I was so engrossed and entranced.

I'm glad that Kevin Bacon was able to become an astronaut after having dealt with the sandworms. It must have really made him realize that he wants more from life.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Apollo 13 (1995) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Thank you!!! It's really lucky that Ken had to stay behind yeah, he was such an MVP here!

Verowak

Great reaction to a super movie!! I’ve always thought that it was “meant to be” that Gary Sinise (like niece) ☺️ (Ken Mattingly) had to stay behind. NO ONE else imo could’ve done what he did. No one else knew the ship as well as he did. I don’t think there’s any way that Kevin Bacon’s character (Jack) could’ve pulled that off. Enjoyed the movie!

Carol Rocha

Same here, also went with Fahrenheit for water temperature back when I had a swimming pool 😅

Stephane Losier

Dang it. The USA. Canada is in America too and so is a great many other countries. Sorry for that.

There is manual now for everything because of people like this. Think WW2 1945 piston engine fighter plane. 1970. Only 25 years later we have landed on the moon, we have a spy plane some nerds like us put together in week the U2 still in service. Built the SR-71 still the fastest plane ever made and retired because the varsity figured out Satellite reconnaissance. The scientist on the B team was the Appolo program. The Soviets put up the 1st space station in space by then. Nothing has changed since 1980-90ish. It has been evolutionary not revolution of crap we can do this now. I am sorry I was not clear. But, I trust you understand the difference between 1945 and 1990...45 years. Then lets say 1990 to 2020.... 30 years What has been the revolution? One cannot say the internet or GPS or stealth for aviation, those existed in 1960 it was just classified. Maybe we need a new cold war so people with throw money to us nerds. The pace has slowed back down to before the Cold war. I do agree with you on children being curious! I do my best to teach my sons 13 and 10. Band, sports robotics whatever etc taking them and exposing them to as many different things and people as possible. Hope you remembered your mom on Sunday. (It was Mothers Day in America). :)

Very little connection to NASA… one radio conversation. But my first father-in-law worked with two contractors… first Aerojet General, then Rocketdyne. He took me to a banquet celebration the last two moon missions.

Sadly I've seen Interstellar and The Martian already, though it's been a LONG time. I was told to not watch Gravity because of the motion/spinning so sadly, I won't be touching that one ever. I remember hearing about First Man when it came out, and I think there was another space movie that came out around that time. Keep an eye out for "The Right Stuff", coming to Patreon soon!

Verowak

That must have been quite something to experience! Being in the Air Force, did you have any dealings with NASA? I have no idea how it works in the US

Verowak

What's great about those recommendations is that they are done at different times. 1983, 1998, 2000 and 2019 so we get to see different storytelling/filming styles!

Verowak

Strangely enough, I use Fahrenheit for fever temperature 🤣

Verowak

I know of Backdraft because of Hans Zimmer lol I didn't know it was a Ron Howard movie though

Verowak

THere are so many streaming service movies/tv series that I've never heard of. It feels like there is no advertising/marketing for them. But it's a nice surprise when I find out about them lol

Verowak

Crazy things still happen now and adults also deal with them lol Now though, more children need to deal with it too, sadly.

Verowak

You know you did CGI right when Buzz Aldrin is amazed at it!! Them getting into an argument does seem very weird from what I've seen of astronaut interviews. It's unfortunate that it was added in just to add drama, since the movie really doesn't need it. It made them look a bit more like petulant children than astronauts. OOh very nice that Jim Lovell had a cameo! I never would have known, thank you!

Verowak

Absolutely! So well done

Verowak

Hi Verowak, great reaction to a movie that has really stood the test of time! I'd like to second the recommendation for "The Right Stuff" (1983). I have a few more space movie recommendations too: ~2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - really an experience more than just a movie ~Interstellar (2014) - sci-fi but with a healthy dose of real science ~The Martian (2015) - one of the better "hard science fiction" movies out there - meaning the science shown on screen is all either already achievable, under development, or feasible with a bit more work ~First Man (2018) - a biopic of Neil Armstrong, really dives into the emotional side of being a test pilot & astronaut ~Gravity (2013) - not very accurate but enjoyable all the same A couple "space adjacent" movies I would also recommend are the first two in the Alien franchise: Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).

I entered the US Air Force a few days after the Apollo 12 mission, and was discharged after the final Apollo 17 mission. I was in Tech School, stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi during the Apollo 13 mission. With Fred Haise being from Biloxi, we got the live TV broadcast on the local station. Only after seeing this film did I learn that outside of southern Mississippi, very few other areas got to see it.

Cliff Adams

Since you really liked Apollo 13, I'd like to second the recommendations for The Right Stuff (1983) and the miniseries, From the Earth to the Moon (1998) (12 eps x 1h). For speculative fiction, Space Cowboys (2000) and For All Mankind (2019) are fun.

Ron

For reference, Fred Haise's fever would be about 40 to 40.5 Celsius

JAKH

Kevin Bacon turned down doing the the sequel "Tremors 2" in order to do "Apollo 13". To see Kevin Bacon's range as an actor try: "Murder In the First' (1995) *True Story* courtroom drama "A Few Good Men" (1992) directed by Rob Reiner, from a stage play by Aaron Sorkin. courtroom drama "Hollow Man" (2000) suspense/thriller

JAKH

Recommendations for watching Tom Hanks: "Charlie Wilson's War" (2007) *True Story* "Captain Phillips" (2013) *True Story* "Greyhound" (2020) drama "A League of Their Own" Directed by Penny Marshall, music by Hans Zimmer *True Story* "Turner & Hooch" (1989) comedy "The Ladykillers" (2004 remake) Written & Directed by the Coen Bros. comedy "Sully" (2016) Directed by Clint Eastwood *True Story* "Splash" (1983) Directed by Ron Howard. comedy

JAKH

"Forrest Bump"? We all know what trailer you have been watching 😉 😉

JAKH

Grandma Lovell was played by Ron Howard's mother, Jean Howard. The priest with the Lovell's during the re-entry sequence was played by Ron Howard's father, Rance Howard. The teen in the yellow dress behind Marilyn Lovell in the night-before-launch scene was Ron Howard's daughter, future actress & director Bryce Dallas Howard. Ron Howard movies to watch: "Backdraft" (1991) Kurt Russell, Robert DeNiro, Scott Glenn, Donald Sutherland. Music by Hans Zimmer, written by Gregory Widen. "Ransom" (1996) Mel Gibson, Rene Russo, Gary Sinise. Music by James Horner Ron Howard acting: "The Shootist" (1976) music by Elmer Bernstein

JAKH

I second the recommendation of the fictional NASA movie "Space Cowboys" (2000) starring Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, James Garner, and James Cromwell Another good space movie that gets overlooked is "Outland" (1981) w/ Sean Connery

JAKH

Soon after this, Tom Hanks did a 12 part miniseries w/ HBO about the entire Apollo program called "From the Earth to the Moon". I recommend that you consider it the next time that you start a series.

JAKH

Some good similar movies you might like, "The Right Stuff", about the early day of the space program. "Space Cowboys", a fun fictional movie. There is a TV show on apple that's alternative history of the space race called for all mankind on apple +, 4 seasons so far, not terribly long seasons.

Bubba Fett

Great reaction. This is from the period of time say 1900 to 2000 when crazy things can happen and adults deal with them. Sometimes it works out great like in Apollo 13. Or building the U2 spy plane still in service today! Or hyper spectral sensor F it lets build it in a week and go to war with it. Sometimes it works and sometimes you die like the Soviets did trying to get the moon. But respect is respect. They were very brave men and women. Flying by the seat of their pants with no manual, just gut feeling and general knowledge making HARD choices on the fly. There are no oops do overs in space or war. No one seems to understand it anymore, for anything.

Daniel Looney

I'm going to have to watch this reaction. When Buzz Aldrin (second man to walk on the moon) watched this movie he called Ron Howard and wanted to know where they got the footage of the launch because he never saw anything like that in the NASA archives. Ron Howard told him that's because it's not NASA footage it was totally made with CGI. Aldrin was amazed at how impressive it was. Just a little fun fact ok a couple more The scene where they get in an argument during the mission, never happened, the filmmakers put it in to add drama. This was a mistake. I'm usually ok with dramatizing something, but in this case, these were the kind of guys who don't do that in these situations, that is why they were picked to be in the apollo program. So I think that scene was inappropriate. At the very last of the movie you see Tom Hanks character shaking the hand of a guy in a navy captains uniform. That guy was the real Jim Lovell. Just an FYI

Scott Howard

Top film with an amazing cast!
