The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Thanks to our Marble winner, Cliff A. for this wonderful movie, The Best Years of Our Lives!

I go into old movies expecting to not enjoy them, just because I know the pacing is very different and they are usually pretty long. I need to stop this because I've enjoyed all of them so far!

A movie made in 1946, that is 78 years ago! Times have certainly changed, but I've learned that I really like seeing just how different movies were back then.

I think it's absolutely wonderful to get to experience these movies. The speech is the most telling thing about old movies. Just the way they speak is so drastically different from what I'm used to.

I would love to hear fun facts that you know about this movie!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

FYI Ben Hur is basically a two part movie. There is an intermission that’s there even in the online version. So you could do it as two parts. The two are like stand alone movies.

Scott Howard

Ben Hur is one that I would love to watch, but I have to basically prep for it since it's so ridiculously long. Anything over 3h for me needs extra prep time lol I'm glad that Virginia Mayo nailed playing a different role, it's always satisfying to see and I bet she must have enjoyed the change too

Ahh so they gave him a special award. I think it's a great thing for the Academy to recognize

Really loved this reaction. I watched this years ago and didn't remember of lot of it but it came back watching it. I've always loved Teresa Wright (Peggy) and Virginia Mayo, this was a very different role for Virginia Mayo, she usually played Likeable Characters ( Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Horatio Hornblower etc...). I always knew she could do a character like this and she did it well, you really didn't like her. I know almost all the actors in this except Homer and the guy playing Al. Dana Andrews was a big film noir guy. The Girl playing Wilma I know best from Ben Hur. This film was abnormally long even for an old movie. I think they were really into showing life for the returning veterans.

Scott Howard

Harold Russell (Homer) is the only performer to receive two Academy Awards (Oscars) for playing the same character in the same film. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but the Academy worried that, being a first-time actor, he would not win. They awarded him a special Oscar for ''bringing aid and comfort to disabled veterans through the medium of motion pictures.'' Later in the ceremony, he won the supporting actor award.
