When Harry Met Sally...(1989) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This movie is adorable and so heartwarming!!

I didn't think I would want characters to be together so much, but here we are.  Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan were perfect 😍

Also, this won the Romance Patreon poll and I'm glad it did!!! Thank you for voting for this one

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

When Harry Met Sally...(1989) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

I have something for you that I think you'll appreciate. In the category of tragedy there is an episode of the animated comedy American Dad titled "Blood Crieth Unto Heaven." This episode uses the format of a stage play. A tragic stage play. Each of the characters are playing a role on stage... and the story is self-aware because it is a play... but they treat it seriously and do not break character. The dialog is self-aware at some points for short bits and they seem to refer (knowingly) to the tragic nature of the play within an episode of a comedy series whose established characters are actors on a dark stage with a live audience in theater. At those times... it's like they're breaking through a sixth wall... ?? LoL so epic! I fall to my knees with an anguished cry unto heaven... before bowing my head as the lights dim... (lol'eth)

That's a wide ranging list above, not the typical set... It depends on how tragic you want it to be... With more tragedy it becomes drama maybe like Sophie's Choice. Or less, maybe lite rom with some sadness like Jojo Rabbit. For movies centered around darkness with romance elements there are, Boys on The Side (1995) Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (2018) And two more for the odd choice selections..., (typically might want to avoid categorizing movies as tragedy because that might have been a surprise element unless it's an all tragedy story 🙂) Forrest Gump (1994) Click (2006)

For a bit of tragedy... let me think... These may have a tinge of, maybe a pang of... tragedy or regret... Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) West Side Story (1961) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

okay, hard to believe but I finally got to watch your full reaction. I was going to say toward the end that it's okay to like this but it ended up that you really did! Awesome! Meg Ryan ended up doing a few rom-coms... She did 3 with Tom Hanks, in this order, Joe vs the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. The one that everyone likes is Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - it has a few things in common with When Harry Met Sally... Let's see... writer Nora Ephron and this time she also directed. Rob Reiner who directed When Harry Met Sally, now he shows up as an actor in Sleepless in Seattle. (lol okay, after Sleepless we can ignore all other Meg Ryan movies 😊 hehe)

It's so well made and adorable. I feel like it'll be one of my all time favourites too

Seems like there is a good reason to have a Rob Reiner poll soon!! I didn't think of it while watching it, but after reading your comment, the movie has such a cozy feel to it! It's such a charming movie There's a fad ( I hope it goes away soon) that I've noticed lately, and it's to use fish eye/ultra-wide lens. I HATE the look of it and the distortion it does. The cinematography can really affect the feel of the movie and I'll have to watch more 80s-early 2000s movies. Sandra Bullock is another actor that I know by name but don't think I've seen her in anything. "While You Were Sleeping" could be so many different genres 😂

One of my all time favorites.

I'm glad you liked this. The dialogue really is witty and snappy. As an aside, it's crazy what a track record director Rob Reiner had at the start of his career. Just about every movie he made was either really good or great, and such wildly different genres. I won't list them all, but they include When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me, Misery, The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and This is Spinal Tap. Edit: I also just wanted to note why I think the movies of this period (late 80's through early 2000's) worked so well, particularly the romantic-comedy genre: The cinematography. For whatever reason, the look of film in this era is just so beautiful to me. (Now movies are almost always shot digitally, and it's just not the same to me.) It just FEELS cozy and wonderful when you see Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan walking around New York. I'd also like to recommend the Sandra Bullock movie "While You Were Sleeping." It's a little sillier than "When Harry Met Sally," but I think it hits that same sweet spot. (The only downside is it's kind of a Christmas movie, so it might feel weird to watch it in February/March.)

If you like Emilia Clarke (I know I do 😁) then ‘Me Before You’ and ‘Last Christmas’ might be worth considering a watch. I also liked Chris Evans’ ‘Before We Go’

James Hadden

Uh... Not in its entirety! 😳 However, "I'll have what she's having..." was definitely a catchphrase!

I will definitely be reacting to more romance movies, though they may only be full length on Patreon for a while. I will gladly try all kinds of romance movies!!!

It did age very well!! It's timeless and just so sweet. It seems I'll need to watch more 80s/90s movies for the sweet 90 minute mark 😂There are definitely so many great movies out there, but it's pretty disheartening when I spend the time to edit a movie and it gets a very low amount of views and comments and general interaction. It's more for my mental health really. I love watching the movies, but it's the whole lack of interest once it's uploaded that gets to me. I love it when people have their parents show up in movies, it makes it just that much more fun :D And yes, bring on tragic romance movies 🤩

Did you quote the faking the orgasm scene? 🤣

Meg Ryan was pretty damn popular in the late 80s/90s! Wow!

I’m so glad you loved this so much. I absolutely love romance movies, so I hope you’ll react to more despite the fact that they’re not the most popular genre for reactions. If they have to be sci-fi romances then so be it, there are some great ones (Eternal Sunshine, Her, The Fountain, and The Lobster are some of my favourites). And there are plenty of great tragic or bittersweet romantic films too. I love romantic comedies but they’re only a small fraction of the great romance movies that are out there, so I’m happy to hear that you’re also interested in seeing more tragic romances or dramatic romance films too. Some of my favourites include Carol, Phantom Thread, La La Land, and of course the Before trilogy. And then if you’re open to foreign films there’s even more brilliant ones like In the Mood for Love and its sequel 2046, The Handmaiden, or lighter films like Amelie or My Sassy Girl. I’m really just scratching the surface here but there are so many great romance films of all kinds out there, and I’d love too see you react to more.

This is such a good one, a worthy poll winner. I think it’s aged really well. I rewatch this every couple of years, usually around Christmas time. I could be wrong, and feel free to correct me anyone, but I think there were a lot of 90ish minute movies back in the 80s and 90s in all genres. It feels like the average runtime has grown significantly over recent years. I don’t mind opening credits. I feel it gives more of a spotlight on those responsible for creating the movie, I don’t think many people stick around to watch closing credits. I fully appreciate the need to get lots of views, but it would be a shame if you mainly concentrate on just a couple of genres, there’s so many great movies out there. For the record, I like the wagon wheel table. One extra note on the diner scene, the lady that said “I’ll have what she’s having” is Rob Reiner’s mother. I have a couple of more tragic romance movies I can suggest if you wish.

James Hadden

This is such an iconic rom-com from my generation. I was 26 when it was released, and we quoted so many of the lines for years after that! I'm so glad you're watching it! 😁

Phil Stubblefield

Yay! I want to watch it asap... Oh, Meg Ryan is also in Joe vs the Volcano 🙂
