Firefly Episode 5 *FULL LENGTH REACTION

I don't know how to feel about Mal at the moment.  The fact that he left still bothers me.  It doesn't seem it's because he trusts Simon to survive, but I don't know.

Now I need to know more about the Shepherd... colour me intrigued!!

The more I see Simon, the more I think he's such an incredibly caring person.  Very selfless and just so great!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the episode.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

I'm so excited for more Firefly!!!!

Firefly Episode 5 *FULL LENGTH REACTION

I may have known, but a refresher wouldn't hurt!

Did anyon tell you why/ or did you fine out Books past

I've never seen Zac Effron in a movie, just know the name so there is no way I would have recognized him without seeing his name in the credits 🤣 It seemed like the alliance cruiser was pretty far away, so I assumed it would be easier to find Simon and River on the planet. It feels like they can be resourceful and find things out if they try. But that's the thing with TV shows, it's hard to have a good idea of time and distances lol

Verowak

Yah know... I never put that together. Good catch. Mal did come for him again.

Garren Haskell

The two things that really stick with me from this one is that Simon's dad said he wouldn't come for him again, but Mal did. The second is that I want to be built like Book when I get that age.

Welcome to the "Is that Zac Effron, yes it is!" episode. As for Mal leaving Simon, note that Mal's perspective and the viewers perspective is different. We know Simon is okay, was close by and if found and rescued could resume his doctor work on Book. Mal did not know these key details. In Mal's judgement, it was not appropriate to gamble Book's life on finding Simon. It could be read into the story that the reason that the Serenity crew was able to find Simon and River quicker than originally estimated is because the "burn the witch" gathering made them easier to find. You pointed out in the moment when Jayne (and Zoe confirmed) that life would be "simpler" without the "two most wanted on board" that Mal is not motivated by simplicity alone. It would have been "simpler" for Mal to sell the medicine to Niska in "The Train Job". Mal was going to do right by Simon to the best of his abilities, but he also had to factor in saving Book too.

The doctor and River (though it doesn't seem like River is beneficial to the crew, so I can see her not being counted). Then again, the Shepherd hasn't done too much for the crew, so if we're going by usefulness, then the doctor would be the best choice. I assumed it would have been somewhat easy to find out where they were taken had they asked around, but sadly I never have a sense of time in these shows 😂

Verowak

That's the same reason I never looked at the cast during the intro of Game of Thrones, I didn't want to know that the episode would have certain characters lol I'm always tempted to skip the "previously on" though Firefly doesn't usually have it, so it threw me off.

Verowak

The parents really don't seem to care much about River, and solely focus on Simon's future. It doesn't sit well with me. I'm hoping they're not in on it, but their actions make me think otherwise. Shepherd doesn't appear to be quite who I assumed he was... now I need to know more!! :D

Verowak

The day Jayne ceased to act like Jayne is a sign of the end of the world 🤣

Verowak

Definitely, but still very strange to me that he left. I never thought he would abandon anyone, but this decision seemed to be the closest to it. I assume he thought Simon and River had better chances of survival than the Shepherd, but still.

Verowak

And on Mal deciding to leave them behind...he kind of hinted at that based on the risks. He figured it would take less time to get to a known source than to try to find a specific individual who could be anywhere. But I see your point about the choice of who to save. If you can only save one, should you save the doctor or the preacher? Based on what's happened so far in the series, it seems the more logical choice for Mal would be to save the doctor. So it makes for an interesting debate.

I know it makes it tricky for syncing, but in some cases you may want to skip the Previously On segment if possible. It does sometimes hint at what's coming up for things that would be better left as surprises. Depending on what source others are using, they may not have the Previously included, so they may have the tricky syncing anyway. Others will have different opinions. Maybe take a quick poll on whether to skip the intro or not?

As many times that I have watched this series, I never came up with the suggestion of Simon and River’s parents being in on what’s going on with her. Interesting thought. The single season’s biggest mystery… Shepherd or River. What’s the story? This time we see Jayne misbehaving in a way.

Billy Dancel

You can always trust Jayne to be Jayne.

JAKH

[No spoilers!] "The fact that [Mal] left still bothers me." Interesting, Vero! I don't remember hearing anyone else voice this opinion. Remember that Mal wasn't the one who suggested the specific course of action that they wound up taking. In fact, he was opposed to it, but it seems that circumstances forced his hand.
