I do wonder if Palpatine secretly hopes that Padme will die on these expeditions and Anakin will be there so he experiences heart break. Probably.

Anakin is just such a tragic character. It's so interesting to see how Anakin was in Episode 1, and just how he changes over the next few movies and series

Unfortunately, at this point Anakin does not care anymore. He has spent his entire adulthood fighting a war that does not matter, and now he is about to lose his wife whom he never got to spend time with due to the war. Palpatine promises him a life with Padmé, and Anakin at this point has lost the ability to think critically. He thinks the dark side is the answer, and in the process of turning he loses everything, including himself. Nothing matters anymore - Padmé is dead, and Anakin's loyalty to Palpatine continues as Darth Vader.
