All of the mall scenes were very nostalgic I worked in the mall for about six years and yeah it used to be packed because that’s where everybody would hang out. The scene where everybody was smelling the papers was because when they first came out of the copy machine the ink would still be wet and you could get high off of it. Nudity in the movie was on purpose it was supposed to be very boundary pushing since there really hadn’t been something like this marketed for teenagers before. Female directors were very rare at this point and I think they can get away with what they did because it was a female director so there wouldn’t be the sexist complaints that would’ve come up otherwise.

This movie made Sean Penn a movie star and Dead Man Walking was the movie the elevated him to the elite dramatic actor status. The actor who played Mr. Hand went on to starvin a tv series Picket Fences where he played a smart ass small town judge with Don Cheadle as the big city prosecutor who moved to the small town.
