Yeah, most of this (and all of Christopher Guest's stuff) is improv. He'll outline the scene, but the actual lines are all improv. He has his rolodex of people he keeps using in large part because they can handle that style of film. It's funny, now most people know Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Jennifer Cooledge, Fred Willard, etc.--but at the time, they were all pretty niche. Totally know what you mean about the parts that feel a bit more set-up, bit of a lull--if you do rewatch though, those are always the parts that all of a sudden hit.
