If you haven’t figured it out. The dad in this was in Mandalorian Season 1 in addition to being in multiple Oscar nominated movies. He has 3 nominations. He wasn’t in Up.

Tommy is destroying everything in his own life (like Ahab) in his rage and anger at Paddy, the thing that (emotionally) crippled him. When Tommy sees Paddy in the hotel room screaming like that, he realizes what he's doing, and that's why he lets go. You're totally right about isolation--when you rewatch the film it really slams home how alone Tommy is at the end. Just desperate and panicking in his corner as the weight of the world crashes down on him, but totally alone. Brendan though, has this coach he clearly has an amazing relationship with (and a wife in the crowd), and that's why he wins. Not because he's a better fighter. And that's the celebration at the end--not just that Brendan wins, but HOW he wins, with Tommy giving up not just the Sparta fight, but the FAMILY fight. On the fights, I'm not an expert, but I think when this came out it was a period in MMA where not everyone was an A++++ in jiu jitsu quite yet, like they are now, so you'd see more fights where a grappler would out of nowhere submit an absolute monster (now even the monsters are A++++ in jiu jitsu)....
