Thanks for the suggestion James. My first time watching this movie. I’m not familiar with the real life case and people, so will comment from the perspective of the movie. It was very effective how dislikable he was portrayed to give no out for Sister Helen’s support of him. It was a values-based decision. I found Susan Sarandon’s performance to be powerful yet delicate, which is a difficult. Getting to know all three families (Matt’s, Hope’s, and Walter’s) again really underlined the complexity and humanity. I will be transparent and say I couldn’t watch the cuts at the end of the film to the actual crimes. I think I understand why the director/script included it (reminder of the actual crime after recently viewing Matt’s arc before death), but I’m not sure the film needed it. It took me out of the film. I looked up text online to see what happens because it was too much.

Tim Robbins and Sean Penn reteam in Mystic River a Clint Eastwood directed movie that is very good, another dark one, but downright sunshine compared to this one.

This is my second watch of this movie first time I have finished it, because as Cam said it does get tedious and I did know what I was getting into going in because I have a friend who is a gigantic supporter of sister Helen so I was aware of the movie and the true story before watching. The death penalty is such a thorny topic because there are so many items on one side or the other. There are people that are innocent there are people sentenced to death especially in southern cities for things that I don’t think should be capital crimes and people are sentenced for something they did in their teens and are being executed decades later when they are far from the person they were when they committed the crime. On the other hand sometimes I think some of the people death is an easy way out compared to having to live with it the rest of your life in prison. Definitely a complex topic.
