2024-08-01 04:11:36 +0000 UTCJoey’s parents were a couple in real life. Spencer Tracey was diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and was literally dying the entire time while making this. He would lie down as soon as he left each scene. He said he didn’t want to wait to die at home and he and Katherine Hepburn had made many movies over the years together. Some of her tears in this movie were real. The studio flipped out that the director cast him and the only way they would move forward was if The couple and the director didn’t get paid until after the film was finished. Many of the cast members were nominated for Oscars for this. The movie was overshadowed by In the Heat of the Night the other civil rights related movie starring Sidney Poitier that year. The actress who played Tilly got cast to play Louise Jefferson in All in the Family and the Jeffersons as sort of a counterpoint to this role. In another coincidence of this months lineup the creator of those shows was a producer on Fried Green Tomatoes Katherine Hepburn is my favorite of the classic movie actors. She was like the Meryl Streep of her time. Her next movie after this that she was convinced to do to get over Spencer’s death will be coming up as a big bite in a few months.
