The line from this movie that always stuck with me was Sophie's to Miss Celie - "Girl child ain't safe in a house full of men." Because that hits home for some of us, and maybe even more so in the time when this movie takes place. Why do you think Celie initially told Harpo to beat Sophie? I think on one level it's because it was all she knew. When this movie (and before it, the book on which it was based) came out, there was some blow back about it being relentlessly anti-male - the men were portrayed as being heartlessly brutal or kind of weak and foolish. Side note - this was Oprah's first real acting gig. She eventually went on to name her media empire Harpo Productions, not only from the movie but because Harpo is Oprah spelled backwards. Side note #2 - Whoopie had done some Broadway stuff but this was also her first major movie, and she really nailed it. We first heard of her through an HBO special of her one-woman Broadway show where she does a variety of characters and really knocked them all out of the park. You can watch it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-PbIZ5QoEg Highly recommend.

Hi Guys!! I had to pop back in to your patreon to enjoy this movie with you. This is one of my favorite movies and I hammered you over the head with it every time you had a live stream. I am so glad you guys finally watched got to watch it. Yes it is a brutal watch, but great movies are supposed to make you feel deep in your soul. If they don't affect you why waste over two hours Watching? One thing I'm not sure if you caught was the irony that Celie didn't even know Albert's name until Shug said it. She was never even shown the consideration of him marrying her, and the fact that she knew so much about his habits to the point where she knew to hand him exactly what he wanted, but never even knew his name, is telling of how overlooked and insignifigant she was to the world around her and how underapprecited she was. You really need to watch Mel Gibson The Patriot. You WILL get pissed, but I promise it will impact you much the way this one did. 😊

This was the first time I have watched this all the way through. We had a copy of this in my house pretty much my whole life because I remember my grandmother was so excited the the anchor from the local tv station here in Baltimore (Oprah) had gone to Hollywood to make a movie. It is hard to believe this is Whoopi’s first movie. This was adapted to a Broadway musical and the musical is what was made into its own movie last year.

Hey Cam and Zay, I really enjoyed watching this with you guys. I saw this in the theater when it was released but hadn’t seen this in a long time. I think my favorite scenes were between Celie and Shug, when they kissed each other, and Shug singing Miss Celie’s Blues. It was like watching Celie , for the first time, realizing that she is beautiful. Great movie and great reaction guys. I have no idea how you both managed to not cry at the end. I knew the payoff was coming…and I still cried!
