I’ve seen this movie once. It traumatized me. I cannot watch it. I’m good up til the end. You know how you’ll just be sitting at home or driving someone and an embarrassing memory flashes across your mind and you’re instantly embarrassed?? This movie does that to me but with horror horror of what happens and everyone’s actions.

Sarah Farren

I find this movie loathsome. It's the same way I feel about the warped imagery in Dali's work. I think this film's nihilism is very powerful and very real.

AranBoston

She's so good that the other three actors are kind of pushed to the side. When I rewatch this, I only care about the mom.

When Cam said Magnolia was the best score he ever heard in a movie, I thought "well, he hasn't heard Requiem". But of course I forgot that pretty much every third movie trailer in the 00's and most of the 10's had that score in it, after this movie. It's still pretty good, though.

That’s definitely a good way to describe the movie! Thanks for those extra fun facts, we didn’t catch the zoom shots but thinking back that’s wild! It definitely is a loud message of a movie and we can see the importance of it being shown, but to highschool students? SHEESH

Thanks Kurt for requesting this. It’s been on my watch list, but I needed a reason to go on this journey. It never fails that when I’m having a really bad day a show or movie that puts my problems in perspective seems to find me. Ellen Burstyn is a great actress. You guys know her as the mom from the Exorcist. Her performance is excellent, but I understand why Julia won. You guys will get to see the movie that won over this sometime next year. This movie was a rollercoaster ride for your senses.

I’m glad you guys appreciated this film. Upon its release, a film critic famously said, “this is the best film that you never want to see again”. I’ve actually seen this many times out of appreciation for the acting and technical excellence. With every viewing, I pick up on some cool techniques. Did you notice that with each act, the camera became increasingly zoomed in on the characters faces. A lot of wide open shots in the first act, but in the third act, the camera shots were so tight, presumably to reflect the characters flaws could not be denied, nor reversed. Also, I noticed with this viewing that all four characters ended up in a fetal position at the end, perhaps to show their complete vulnerability, like a new born baby. Sarah was played by legendary actress Ellen Burstyn, who was nominated for the best actress Oscar, but inexplicably lost to Julia Roberts. It is widely considered to be one of the biggest blunders in Oscar history. Cam, you’ve got a keen eye. In Sarah’s monologue in the kitchen with Harry, you noticed a slight shudder and blur of the camera. Darren A. Said in an interview that the camera operator was crying from Ellen’s performance. He liked the realness of that imperfection, and left it in. I agree with you on the mild neglect to Marlon’s character. To me, the score was really the dominant fourth character, and really amped up the emotion, terror and anxiety for the viewer. And to answer your question, the theme music was written and performed for this film, but because it was so impactful and dramatic, it’s been reused in other films. In my opinion, this is the most important film of this century. It has been deemed so impactful to viewers that some progressive high schools show this film, and it is frequently included as mandatory viewing in drug rehabilitation programs. That said, I’d say Darren’s vision and choices were 100% spot-on in capturing the dangers and horrors of addiction. I don’t think the director’s cut is that different from the theatrical release. When his full version was reviewed for a rating, it was given NC 17, which prevents it from being showed in many theaters. I think he cut out the close-ups of the sex toy and reference to “ass to ass” in Marion’s group encounter. I think I heard you say on live stream that an edited version will be on YouTube. If you do, thanks for helping to spread the important message of this film. Even if we do not suffer from our own addiction, it’s good to know the signs and behaviors to look out for in friends or family.

Ellen Burstyn's performance in this movie is, in my opinion, the best piece of acting I have ever seen. Her spiral is so believable and her sense of loneliness is palpable. Also, her monologue is out of this world.
