Some stories from the real players made it into the movie, but no character is based on somebody. All of the extras at the end of the movie, and during the closing credits were the real players. Jon Lovitz who you loved at the beginning is a comedian who was just coming off of SNL when this was made. I’m not sure how much of his lines were improv. The writers of this made multiple hit comedies in the 80s and 90s. The director of this is Penny Marshall who was married to Rob Reiner. Their daughter played the woman who got the telegram her husband died. Penny’s brother Garry who played Mr. Harvey wad also a famous writer and director who has a big chapter of tv history to his credit He pitched in lines to the movie too. I saw this movie so many times when it came out because every woman I knew wanted to see it especially people alive during the time the league existed. They played through the end of the Korean War. I’m glad you caught Madonna in the closing credits. I figured the dark hair threw you off.
