Magnolia (1999) Full Length Reaction!

Comments

And that's the film's fault, not times 😂 ... but yeah... I agree.

Sutil

Oh and just one last thing, sorry for over posting... but this is by far my favorite reaction from you guys... I always, always love your comments at the end but usually get annoyed when you guys talk over the entire film about random stuff, but this felt way different, I really enjoyed watching along the entire film with you! Thank you! Awesome stuff! Keep up the good work...

Sutil

Ooops, I just saw Ryan had already mentioned this... :p sorry

Sutil

Yeah, wish they hadn't cut those scenes out... and great interpretation!

When this came out it was recognized as having an amazing ensemble cast of a list actors... -Tom Cruise -Juliane Moore -Phillip Seymour Hoffman -John C. Riley - william H Macy -Alfred Molina -Phillip Baker Hall -Jason Robards The only guy that I think wasn't that famous back then was "Patton Oswald" he is more well known now... but all the others were top tier actors... this movie did get a lot of attention and awards.. it got Oscar nominated for best supporting actor for Tom and also Best Screenplay. But the Oscar's are just political they don't mean much... but it got plenty of awards and recognition.

And again about the frogs and the gun... obviously is not a realistic event... it's very "deus ex machina" type device... but it's intentional... and definitely a biblical reference but most of all just emphasizing chance, the unexpected and un explainable... we tend to get caught up on "is this realistic?" I think if you drop a full bottle of morphine pills on the floor where you have a bunch of dogs... one might eat one. That seems "realistic" You say that, that... was unnecessary... Why? We all love dogs dude... but it's things that happen... Gator was about to commit suicide and the frog "saved" his life from the bullet... but in turn it caused a house fire... so he won't die from a bullet, but burnt. It feels more karmic. But anyways,... the whole frog thing is an artistic decision that ties everything perfectly and symbolically. But not realistic. I'm a bug fan of P.T. Anderson... you guys should definitely check out "Boogie Nights" if you liked Magnolia... they are similar in style... but his masterpiece is "There will be Blood"

Also about the kid's "rap" scene... originally it did play a role in the film... there was a whole sub plot about the "worm" who was apparently the person that murdered the guy in the first scene where the police guy goes into Marcy's house, which I believe is the worms mother or something like that... I don't remember exactly, but I do know the whole kid and the rap part had a larger role in the film but was eventually cut... which makes sense since there's already so many things going on...

Time has not been kind to American Beauty.

This was my first time watching this and thanks to Ryan for picking it. This was a really great movie. It is a shame that it didn’t get more love from awards. I think the frog scene might have hurt it because it makes it a little less realistic and takes you out a bit. In another year when some of the people involved were more well known or there were more slots for Best Picture it would have done better. I am curious to rewatch American Beauty though because I think this movie was actually better than that movie that won.

Jonathan

I’m an American and those are the only awards I know about 😆

Ryan Roach

There’s been hurricanes and tornadoes that have sucked up sea life and spit it out on land, but nothing to the extent in this movie.

The frog thing is something that has happened historically ... at least with fish... that's why on the close up to to the painting it says "but it did happen" and then the kid genius (an expert on weather phenomenons" says "this happens" but it's definitely symbolic of chance and some say biblical reference but it's also definitely open to other interpretations

Sutil

The film won "The Golden Bear" at the Berlin Film Festival and another 27 awards from other academies than the mainstream american ones.... and it was on like 200 top films of the year lists

Sutil

The only award this movie won was a Golden Globe for Tom Cruise for Best Supporting Actor, and he was also nominated for an Oscar in that category. I think it's crazy it didn't get more love, although 1999 was an incredible year for film, so that's probably part of why.

Ryan Roach

Thanks for the additional info! And you make an extremely compelling case for the frogs, totally could see that being the case

Hey! Glad you guys liked it so much. Haven’t watched the entire watchalong yet, but I skipped to the end with your wrap up. I haven’t seen this movie in about a decade, so it will be interesting to see how I feel about it now. I spent the first part of the century convincing every single friend and family member I have to watch this, and now I am reduced to paying strangers on the Internet lol. As for some of the questions you brought up: I do believe that the frogs are some sort of devine judgment from on high. The narrator talks about coincidence in the opening segment, but he ends it saying that, surely this all wasn’t just coincidence. I don’t think it was. The frogs prevented Jimmy Gator from taking easy way out, punished Donnie for stealing for corrective oral surgery by causing him to need corrective oral surgery, woke Earl one last time, so he could stare into his son’s eyes as he died, brought Claudia and her mother together. And somehow brought the gun back to Jim. There are also people in the game show audience holding signs with a Bible verse on them that talks about plague. As far as the murder mystery goes, there was a storyline cut from the film. The little kid who rapped was actually the son of Marcy, the woman being arrested for murder at the beginning. It turns out she was not the murderer. It was her husband, the rapping boy’s father. Yet another bad father in this movie. in the original cut, Jim loses the gun, and the little kid grabs it, and shoots his father with it to protect his mother. He then runs to the library to take shelter during the frog storm and encounters Stanley and tells him what he did. This inspires Stanley to stand up to his own father. I know it’s super long already, but I wish they had not cut the story because it would’ve been cool to wrap up that weird extra storyline, and also because the movie is embarrassingly lacking in diversity especially given that it was set in Los Angeles. Most of the songs in the soundtrack that Cam liked so much are by Aimee Mann. I used to love listening to it.
