Believe it or not Yu-Gi-Oh, wasn't always about a card game. In the early chapters, the series was about various different "shadow games" played between the Pharoah and shitty people who wronged Yugi and his friends. One of those shadow games was the "Duel Monsters" card game, which he played against Kaiba. The card game proved to be so popular that the author and his editors decided to focus on the card game going forward, with a few occasional exceptions. Those early, mostly non-card game chapters of Yu-Gi-Oh were adapted into an anime by Toei (often referred to by fans as "Season 0"), which is a separate continuity from the "Duel Monsters" anime that this Abridged series is based on. In the "Season 0" anime, many of the character designs look different from what you see in the "Duel Monsters" anime. Kaiba, for example, had green hair. So that's the story behind Kaiba's hair; the Abridged pulled that moment from the "Season 0" anime.
