Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment. I can't believe how thoughtful and detailed ALL of your replies are, I mean I love you guys already but I almost - AMOST... not quite - teared up. I honestly would have been ok if you all said "yes we would in fact prefer the older style", but this validation also really, really helped.
Some of you do prefer the older style though, so I will still need to think about it. A part of me can't seem to let go either. But I'm still trying to figure out if this is a "kill your darlings" situation, or a "you're just being lazy, you should in fact stick to your old signature style". This is a personal emotional issue I need to work through I think...
I had to do a little experiment - as you can see above. What do you think? Does seeing what could be change your mind in any way?
One of you said something that struck me - "remind yourself what you loved AND hated about it" (thank you Mai Lundi). Doing this little experiment did, in fact, remind me of one thing I truly disliked about this style - often, the art doesn't read very well, because the characters and background values run into each other. I don't need to worry about that with line art. Trying to work around that means fiddling with the colours and that is part of why this style takes a lot longer.
So I feel a little better... but I still need to sleep on this. A lot of opinions I'm getting seems to agree the lineless style is "more impactful", which I agree with. I just need to figure out if that's worth sacrificing, or if it's important enough to me to suffer for...
Again, thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and replying so considerately, I genuinely appreciate your support. <3
