Tears of the Kingdom initial thoughts!

I am hoping to get the future episodes up earlier for Patreon but I wanted to jump on it today!  The upload rate will slow and another letsplay will start in a week or two (at the latest) alongside this which will be early access again! :)

But here are my Patreon exclusive personal initial thoughts lmao:

(mild video spoilers and game spoilers ahead)

((You have been warned!!!!))

It is super similar to BOTW at the moment, as to be expected but I am feeling the same way as I did at the start of Breath of the Wild too! Which is, omg this is different, ahhh. However I did really enjoy that opening section, walking through with Zelda, that was a nice change and I hope we explore more of the world with friends by our side. I am still not a huge fan of the voice acting, for anyone that doesnt know the voices are a new thing for The Legend of Zelda but they still havent given Link a voice so it can feel a little odd during interactions sometimes haha. My favourite dialogue sections are always the ones I read through text, we will see what happens for the rest of the game! The starting area is definitely the Great Plateau 2.0, the tutorial area of BotW. I am excited to find out more about the Zonai, see where Zelda is, see the TEMPLE OF TIME, and just hoping for dungeons. It was cool, I got emotional at playing a new Zelda, and kind of emotional to record it too because I can remember so many times in the past while playing through Twilight Princess etc and thinking "I wonder if it would be fun to make a YouTube channel and record this". This will hopefully be the "sloppiest" video since I recorded it at midnight and edited it all day haha. I think my mindset is to try to leave my old Zelda expectations at the door and just experience the game as it is, then revisit the old games on my channel later to introduce them to you all (if you haven't seen them before) because they are absolutely stellar and that formula is still my favourite. The only thing I don't like about the game so far... Ultra hand. Omg, the framerate and quality drops were ROUGH while using it. I tried my best to edit it out of the video in a way that made the gameplay flow but it may be tough to do later on. But yeah, enjoying it, excited to play more, lets go!!!! :)

Tears of the Kingdom initial thoughts!

Finally getting time to start this series. Enjoying the episode immensely. This is my first dive into anything Zelda. Ambers temperament is so perfect for this game. Can’t wait for the hours and hours ahead.

Rogue Variable

I just wanted to say that I'm really really looking forward to watching these... but I'm playing it myself at the moment and I'm trying to avoid spoilers! Really glad that it sounds like you're enjoying it!

Ant

Welp, you have inspired me to play my first Zelda game since Ocarina of Time. And by that, I mean going back to play BotW first. Which also meant getting a switch and both BotW and TofK. BotW has one of the highest ratings of all time so I had to start there. Nintendo should be giving you a cut! My purchases are all inspired by your love of these games (and reminded me of how much I love Ocarina of Time many years ago). I will watch your playthrough once I get done my own. Excited to dive in. Hope it's been tons of fun so far.

Great initial video and what a game!! I played this all weekend, so I allowed myself to watch your 1st video as there would be no spoilers and I wanted to see your reaction. However, I don’t want to see anything in reviews or playalongs I don’t experience first hand myself, so for that reason I’m going to pick up your TOTK videos again in about 6mths. Good luck, I hope they perform well

Glad someone else mentioned the Ultra Hand frame drops, Jesus, spinning stuff around at 15fps is a motion sickness nightmare 😂 rest of the game has been really cool so far, I've just got through the opening area and returned to familiar territory, which is an odd experience as it kinda feels a bit like DLC or an old expansion pack on steroids all of a sudden, even though the game is obviously very different.

Andy

This is the first game I’m actually playing along with you! Loving tears so far. Gonna try and stay ahead of you so there aren’t too many spoilers, but I’m sure we’ll be taking some different paths once the game opens up. This game is hard to put down!

My thoughts on the voice acting are biased for a couple of reasons. For one, my ADHD is particularly apparent whenever I have to read anything, and I can't maintain the thread for long. So a voice over really helps me in that regard. And for another… ireallywannahearMattewMercer By the way, I couldn't help but notice the design similarities between the Zonai and the Nomai. They're both kind of cow/sheep/goat/deer humanoids, and their names are even similar. really makes ya think 🤔

Happy Zelda day! I really hope this series does well for you and more importantly you love the game.

The Mighty Pipe

What a great way to start a series. I just might have to pick myself up a switch so I can play these games. They definitely look like a game I can totally immerse myself in. And I don't care about spoilers. I get so immersed that I would still get excited at parts even if I saw it a bunch of times. Thanks for the video. I'm pretty hyped about it now

I’m a few hours in and have gotten off the Plateau 2.0. While I have enjoyed the game mechanics immensely (Nintendo are geniuses with what they’ve enabled you to do with the new abilities!) I found the Plateau too big, it’s slow and cumbersome to navigate. It took way to long for a tutorial area, and I know, Zelda tutorials have historically been pretty bonkers (Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword famously taking forever) but at least those intros had a lot of story and character interaction. The Plateau 2.0 felt too close to its BotW counterpart in concept – combined with so many environmental puzzles it turned into sort of an outdoor dungeon when viewed as a whole. Coming off such an intense introduction beneath Hyrule Castle I wish the game had followed that up with a bit more sense of urgency. As for the voice acting, I think my biggest gripe are the voice actors, which here and in BotW feel so subpar. It’s not Symphony of the Night bad, but they’re not suitable for a triple-A title. I also hate that we have only partially voiced characters. They don’t have to voice everyone, but at least all of the ones who do have voice lines should have speech for every line. The compromise feels too jarring.

Marcel Génetay

I'll have to watch it a bit later, not sure how far you progressed through Plateau 2.0 but there have been some noticeable throwbacks in that place alone. I've done 2 of the major "sequences", I'll call them, so far and my eyes need a bit of a rest. I wasn't a huge fan of BotW relative to the others in the franchise but this one has been magnificent so far and I don't see it slowing down. I still prefer the old format but the missing ingredients of BotW I feel have been addressed.

Adam

I've been playing all afternoon and I'm still in the tutorial area! I'm thinking you've got a mammoth task on your hands with this one jesus, good luck haha its gonna be huge! It's so funny you mention the voice acting, at times it's SO bad I wished they'd just stuck with text. It's so jarring when zeldas like "are you okay link?" And he just doesn't answer ahaha. I think once you're outside the great sky island I won't be able to watch the videos just to avoid spoilers! But I will like and leave a positive comment on every video during this play through. I know how much this game means to you so I want to be as supportive as I can, even only in a tiny way. And plus I want to see more zelda content haha Good luck with the rest of the series!

Mark

Wooow, you’ve put this out so quickly! :o Amazing shirt, by the way! I’m quite jealous haha It’s very similar to Breath of the Wild, isn’t it? I’m hoping for some more new stuff other than just sky islands and somewhat different powers. So far, I’m not entirely convinced I’m into another playthrough of the same world with the same mechanics 😔 The cutscenes were awesome and Zelda is great ❤️ I hope she has a bigger presence than in BotW 😊

Huib Gelling

I needed to watch the recap... I didn't know Zelda was a person :) I think i'm gonna enjoy your let's play more now.
