It was time to head home.
I was a husband and father with six… five kids to take care of, and I made time for them, and for things to do around the house.
I didn’t need to eat more than a couple apples a month, and those just to avoid losing some weight. That certainly helped with the food situation, but my kids all needed to eat, voracious omnivores that they were, and Diana loved to cook, especially with all the magical help in the kitchen making sure she had helpers and could clean up quickly.
So, the evening meal was Verra Important, I made sure the kids knew it was Verra Important, and everything else stopped when it was time for the evening meal, bar none.
Me not making it home for the evening meal meant something dreadfully important, probably lethal, was going on.
Meat tended to be light unless there was a bonanza in wild hogs or something Boneriver’d in to be butchered, or someone killed a giant shark or squid or something. Chicken was common, beef was a rarity given how we were still trying to grow the size of the herds, and good bread was often the centerpoint of the meal, along with the eight-year soup, always on the stove, always available for a side dish, lunch, or if someone stopped over.
Given even a fast meal at my house was QL 20 and worthy of a master baker, cook, and chef, the kids didn’t complain about the food. They might not get some QL 30 pie or ice cream if they complained about the normal food, or (horrors) have to eat some QL 10 stuff!
On the other hand, they’d all started getting good at ‘constructive criticism’, and they all had their favorites. Diana’s seafood soup was always a hit, when we could get the ingredients, and if I made bean soup it was cooking all day and driving them wild as they waited for it. Oscar and Millie, the Phantom Servants who maintained the house, shooed them out of the kitchen whenever they wanted to steal a bite.
From there, it was showing us and one another what they’d learned that day, maybe watching an Illusion of recalled movies or events from before the Fall and the world we were trying to reclaim, or just a simple evening playing cards.
Safe, and pretending there wasn’t a hostile world out there ready to kill us all if it could.
