The bit where they got off track for a minute about BBQ was a bit weird for me. I had just taken a bite of some brisket I got from Terry Black's about 5 minutes before Ben mentions them. Really threw me for a loop.

Maybe in his final moments he realized he was never meant to see the results of his great work. The true curse of great magic, it out lives it's caster. Also for your German Wizard persecution episode, take a look at the Fraternitas Saturni. Absolutely fascinating with a wonderful set of texts written. Including ba text containing many of their old rituals.
