Re: "Are festivals an artist's crowning glory?" it would be interesting to study how Beyoncé's career trajectory went after she destroyed at Coachella in 2018. She's a global star, she has her own label, she's made several movies/documentaries...but all this comes after she secured several Grammys and her amazing Grammy performances still stay in my mind to this day, as does her Coachella. By contrast, Enhypen "killing it" at Coachella comes only five years post-debut, their set was rather short, 45 minutes, and the songs were all remixes, which speaks to not giving full satisfaction to fans (though they were good remixes, I felt a little cheated not getting full songs). It felt really rushed, tbh. I know their numbers were great, they did so well, but Sunoo was the true star of that performance with his stable vocals and unbothered poise in that venue. He killed it, while the other members seemed very stiff, nervous, over-hyped, or just weren't shown on camera enough (Jay and Sunghoon, especially). It begs the question whether standards are lowered for Asian acts? I love Enhypen, I've followed them from the very first teasers for i-Land. I'm thrilled they did so well, but to compare with Queen Bey, they really did not deliver an amazing stage, they were loud and chaotic and the vampire concept was lost. Some of their background dancers had a bigger impact, actually. I know Ni-Ki is among the top ten kpop dancers right now, but they didn't show that at all. Heeseung's vocals are top notch, but he kept losing his breath. Jay's rockstar quality vocsls and visuals weren't showcased. These are just some observations I had as an Engene.
Lisa's performance was good, but it leaned heavily into sexual stereotypes of Asian women, imo. She didn't come off as strong so much as exotic dancer, I thought. Maybe I'm too old to get it, but I felt like it was a bit degrading. I didn't bother to watch Jennie's perf. because I saw enough in her role in "Idol" to know it would probably not differ from Lisa's perf. Just some thoughts. I'm not fast enough to type all this in the Live show chat, sorry.
