As someone who is one of several people behind a twitter account that’s gotten kind of big, being big on social media by itself is super not lucrative but it does give you a platform to sell something else, so if you get big there’s a lot of financial pressure to have something else to sell. We started a podcast, the average episode gets 1% the number of downloads as we have followers and the podcast is significantly more lucrative and provides us with far more legitimacy to pursue other commercial opportunities. I don’t even think the podcast is that good (and I’m saying this as the producer) but it’s something we have to do to support everything else.
