At this point, we all know that Terri was never the villain. Most people say Big Mama was the villain but I personally think it was Max.
She stole her sisters man, married him, had kids and then taunted Terri for not being a homemaker. THEN had nerve to come asking her for money at EVERY turn. Then the family tried to make her feel guilty for Lem being in jail, when he had the gun illegally. Wouldn’t let Terri sell the house she was paying everything for but she was bitter over getting cheated on. Invited Cousin Faith, who she pushed off on Terri in the first place, back into the family after said affair. AND where was she while her son was all over Chicago in grown folks business?
Yeah, Max was giving big villain energy. I still love the movie tho. 8/10 Artery Clogging Plates for me!

I give it a 7/10 plates. The truest of storylines was Lem’s. My cousin went through that job stuff after being paroled. I can’t cape for Terri like others have though. That holier than thou attitude she has is too toxic for me.

Just started watching. Boyz II Men really made the greatest momma song ever. My moms told me to play it at her funeral (far far in the future god willing).
EDIT: don’t know if anyone answered. but the part where big momma burnt herself is showing an effect of the diabetes. It messes with your nervous system if u aren’t treating it. Mainly limbs and stuff. That’s why a lot of ppl have to get stuff amputated.

I loved this reaction! A lot of black people i know love the movie for nostalgia reasons. I’m 23yrs old, watching this in its entirety for the first time and i have some thoughts😂 the “meaningful lessons” that they kept trynna apply to each of their relationships were not comparible. (Ex. Max telling Bird to let Lem find his own job because Big Mama let Daddy gamble…) Also, there was NO grace given to Teri. She was labeled as bitter by everybody, but they placed the responsibilities on her every chance they got. And i understand wanting everybody to get along, but there’s some folks you just don’t need in your life. After Miles cheated on Teri w/ Faith, both of them disrespected her and everybody just said “Hm, that ain’t my business.” And don’t forget, neither one of ‘em apologized. It wouldn’t meant nothing to me, but the fact that it wasn’t said fuels the grudge i’mma hold. Like whoa, this why Teri fed up w/ y’all. She doesn’t feel supported by anybody, so when she handles stuff (like getting Lem outta jail) she HAS to announce it. Big Mama was laid up in a coma, and shawty had to remind y’all she got her degrees. Ahmad was way too inmeshed in grown folks business. Had that boy so stressed he damn near burnt Big Mama’s house down! The ending monologue felt so outta place after the storylines we just walked through😂 my take away from this reaction was your quote “it’s too much forgiveness up in here for me!”

I rate Soul Food 7 out of 10. Thank you for this reaction. Rewatching this movie as an adult i’ve come to the realization that the family treated Terri like garbage. They used & abused her. The movie made Terri look like the villain because of her standoffish demeanor. The reason why she was negative Nancy was because Max stole her boyfriend & married him, the family made her pay for everything & her marriage was on the rocks. Max was a lowkey bum. Bird was probably still messing around with Simuel because she didn’t set any boundaries & she went behind her husband’s back to Simuel to get him a job. That was a real group. The song played in the audition was A Dream by Debarge. 2Pac & Blackstreet went on to sample that song.
