Look up his story and you will see where the inspiration came from. Y'all have to watch Texas Chainsaw: the beginning which came out 3 years after this one to get the backstory

There was no actual Leatherface or anything. Ed Gein inspired the director to write the Leatherface character and set it in Texas. The aesthetic of the film and the way it's presented gives off a true story feel is all.
