There is a documentary/BTS as how the five heartbeats was made. Yall should definitely watch it, even if it’s just on your own time.

He was inspired by the groups The Temptations and The Dells. The Temptations were suppose to be consultants on the movie but the studio didn’t want them to cause they didn’t want it to be depicted as a “temptations” movie. So, they pulled inspo from The Dells singing group. It’s fiction but HEAVILY inspired but real stuff the groups went through back then
