2025-01-29 17:16:38 +0000 UTCSo both of y'all are actually correct lol...Jennifer Hudson has a powerhouse type of voice, like Aretha Franklin and Jazmine sullivan....but Beyonce was absolutely holding back because she was told to do so in order to get the role. The character, Deena, was supposed to have a lighter/softer voice, which is why her mom said "I never thought my daughter had much of a voice." During the filming of this, Beyonce also recorded her second solo album, B'Day, and on it she's singing more powerfully (she actually talks about the differences in her singing style in old interviews for the promotion of Dreamgirls and B'Day).

She was talked into it with the promise that she would eventual sing lead. When they were the Dreamettes, before working with Jimmy, I'm sure they agreed on Effie singing lead. So to say they didn't complain when she sung lead, that's because they (all 3) were comfortable with that arrangement. With Curtis, when Effie sung that love song it wasn't used because it was "too lite". They got rid of Jimmy and now Deena is singing lead because she's skinny and her voice doesn't have soul. Effie earned the right to say her peace. Honestly I don't think she would have acted quite the way she did if she wasn't pregnant. Pregnancy hormones can cause explosive behavior sometimes. You also say Effie will be able to make a name for herself outside of the group but seriously, how many people in that time period can you name that were backup singers, broke off, and became successful?

So it makes sense that she was moody and snappy and accusing everyone of turning on her. Though she did have her selfish moments, she didn’t deserve all that.

He paid for the girls to lose in the beginning so he could become their manager. Finessed Danny Glover into becoming Jimmys manager. Then when Jimmy was too much let him go. Was with JHud because if he wasn’t with her he wouldn’t have been able to get them from the jump. It’s an amazing movie. Top 3 musical all time to me. Yall be doing yall big ones on these reactions.

If Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé was all apart of one group and Whitney was the lead. Beyoncé and Jennifer would still be huge especially if they broke apart later on and continued to show there talents individually. Also in the reaction all I was saying is that Effie was always the lead you can’t let your friend take the lead for a while she felt she was better than both her friends. Back then, Black female musicians like Effie were considered “too loud and aggressive.” It’s a stereotype that still follows Black women today. Someone like Whitney Houston had Deena’s exterior with Effie’s voice and that’s why she became so successful I also disagree with the notion that “there’s no problem being in the back.” We all know the leader of the group gets all the credit, fame, brand deals etc. I don’t know why Jay is acting like that is not the case. People know the “96 Bulls” but most can’t name a player outside of Jordan. Maybe Pippen and Rodman. But that’s it. They all played a part yet the other 12 players are forgotten in history. And I don’t blame those players if they feel some kinda way about that

I’d assume a lot of record label executives, producers and promoters took advantage of female talent during that time. Esp since connections to the industry were everything. You couldn’t survive as an independent artist (due to a lack of social media). You needed a label to find mainstream success. Speaking out against a man in any sort of power could stop you from receiving opportunities

As a kid I remember opening my presents and then we went straight to the movies lol.. this movie was a big ass deal!
