It's against the law to notify anybody but family medical information. That's why they didn't talk to her girlfriend. Legally they couldn't. Some states recognize same sex marriages . Some don't.

It was illegal just like 40yrs b4 the show and still illegal in the military during the show. Kima has talked about how she keeps it a secret at work a few times
