you can notice, everytime you see Ironman in the MCU his suit has an upgrade directly related to the last time you saw him, like in Avengers, his suit absorbs and uses Thor's electricity because of Vankos whips this time..

Tony Stark because he thought he was dying gave Pepper CEO of the company, and let Rhodey take the suit because he thought they would be able to keep on his legacy when he dies. That’s why when black widow was talking in the donut shop she said “Tony Stark set redundancies for unauthorized use of the Iron Man suit” which means Tony Stark can kick anyone out of the suit he doesn’t want in there at anytime. If he didn’t want Rhodey to take the suit he wouldn’t be able to.
