Actually, now that I think about it some more, your original statement when you realized they looked like the supposed 'Gods' of Chief Tani's people, about the prophetic aspect kind of makes a lot of sense. Like, perhaps it was some kind of plot by the actual Gods to prophesize that Miguel and Tulio would come BECAUSE the Gods wanted to get rid of Tzekel-Khan? That's why the stone statues looked so much like Tulio, Miguel, and Altivo? Even the one that Miguel and Tulio originally found before being led into the city proper when they first met Chel, the person depicted kneeling before the gods on the statue kind of resembled Chel? Honestly, there's a whole lot of conjecture that could come out of these movies. Lol.

I'm at 25:07, and yep but it wasn't even thousands of years ago! The Road to Eldorado takes inspiration from real Mesoamerican civilisations from the 1500s, like the Aztecs, Mayans and Inca. In history, Spain invaded and sacked their cities, but disease also spread quickly and killed many.

So, one theory about this movie that people have is that the Armadillo following them throughout the whole of the movie that they saved close to the beginning is actually a God and it is the reason for all of the mystical stuff happening during Miguel and Tulio's con job. Because, if you'll notice, almost every time they need to prove that they're Gods, the Armadillo is somehow involved. Indirectly, during the volcano scene, he's a part of the chaos going on around Tulio's feet. During the ball game, the armadillo becomes their ball and is a part of the reason they ended up winning the game. There's just a lot going on that makes it seem like the armadillo is their patron God helping them out.
