Brother Bear - FULL REACTION
Added 2024-07-19 04:39:38 +0000 UTCI finally got around to watching it!! I can see why so many people love this film. Really loved the focus on approaching hardships with love rather than hate in order to grow. Also the concept of someone turning into a bear is just so much fun. Enjoy :)

Every time the brother's name was called throughout the movie, my dog was turning around and looking for his friend. He was very disappointed not to find him! Anyway, I think this is one of the deepest Disney movies ever...

2024-07-20 19:36:15 +0000 UTCThis is a really underrated Disney film. It makes me emotional not just because of the film itself, but because there's quite a bit of sorrow behind the scenes. Joaquin Phoenix (Kenai) worked on this movie not long after losing his own older brother, River. River Phoenix died of an overdose outside Johnny Depp's nightclub, and Joaquin was with him when it happened (he was the one who called 911). So he could very much relate to Kenai's grief. In 2020 he and his fiancee (Rooney Mara) had a son, and they named him River. They had a second child last month. I'm really glad to see he appears to be doing well, he is one of my favourite actors and he seems to be a man with a lot of integrity. Jason Raize (Denahi) was the original Simba when "the Lion King" premiered on Broadway. He's a really good singer, if you haven't before you should check out the original Broadway soundtrack (especially the song "Endless Night", were Raize gets to truly shine both as an actor and a singer). Sadly, voicing Denahi was his only film role. He unalived himself in early 2004. On a lighter note, Phoenix flubbed one of his lines, and it made it into the film (when he's talking about "you and Binky finding the worlds biggest pine cone ever"). Jeremy Suarez (Koda) ad-libbed his response, which made it into the movie as well. I'm very ambivalent when it comes to the soundtrack of this movie. I really like "Great Spirits" (performed wonderfully by Tina Turner), and I LOVE the song that plays when Kenai is first transformed. The lyrics are in Iñupiat, but there's also a version (which you can find on Spotify) where Phil Collins sings the lyrics translated into English. They're IMHO extremely on-point for what's happening at that part of the film, and are from Sitka's POW. I can very much recommend a video from the YouTube channel Sideways, about Disney's use of language in their music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btxZGzWlsMw There's also a really good song playing during the credits, written and performed by Phil Collins, called "Look Through My Eyes". I'm fine with "On my Way"; it's not really my favourite but I can't deny that my bestie and I sing it whenever we're going on a trip. The last two songs, however, I really don't like. The lyrics are just too on the nose for me, I would have preferred some amount of subtlety. Originally we were supposed to hear Kenai's whole confession to Koda, and I believe Phoenix and Suarez recorded the full dialogue. It was decided though that it worked better without hearing everything. I kind of agree with that, but I wish it had just been set to instrumental music, or a more subtle song. Kenai's first transformation scene is one of my all-time favourite Disney scenes. The visuals and the music are both gorgeous. And huge, huge props to Sitka's animator. Just one look, and his disappointment and sadness is clear as day. Sorry for the long comment, but I have a lot of feels with this movie. Great reaction, I enjoy hearing your insights. 2024-07-20 01:48:43 +0000 UTCOne of the things I like about this movie, is the idea/theme/premise whatever you want to call it, that we all have this idea in our minds of who we are, who we are meant to be, and who we want others to perceive us as. In this instance, he had this expectation for his totem because of who he thought he was /wanted to be. And so often we have the completely wrong idea of ourselves. But if you approach that introspection with an open mind and willingness to see where your heart truly lies, wonderful things can happen. Your true passion and purpose and identity could very well be nothing like you thought it would be. Forcing yourself to be this "percieved" persona could rob you of your best life, a life that you at one point would not even have remotely considered. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk 😊

I actually think the most impactful part of it, even though it's only a flash, is when Kenai is remembering the incident and hears Koda's mother calling frantically for him because he can understand bear speech now. You actually clocked it much earlier than most people, I saw you make the connection right when we met Koda.

If you have the time at some point you should watch the YouTube video Cinema Therapy did on this movie. They got the director on to talk about the movie and he talked about the thoughts behind that choice. Another thing, since you talked about the fish in this and many other movies, you really should do a reaction to finding Nemo. It's amazing. I would also love for you to watch Bolt. Nobody really seem to be talking about that one either, but I really love that movie.
