YourNightlyRamble - "Reference Is Theft"

As an artist, and I know some of you are artists as well.. (I see you. 👉), there are times that you can't do things on your own. And that's obviously fine.. but some times there's people who are a little too.. anal.. about the subject of references.

"Vague similarity," not "vague difference" - I noticed a slip up in my vocabulary a few times, oops!

Sorry for momentary pauses in this one. It's kind of hard to put into words sometimes what.. I guess how I felt was baffled?

I completely agree with you and it makes me smile you think of these rambles in such a way. :) Something that comes to mind is an artist that goes by 'Speedoru.' He made a Q&A and someone asked him about his style and he bluntly said, "Honestly, it's a collage everything I liked from other artists and I made it my own.

Just my non-artistic pov... all created things from art to literature to machinery and beyond, is made through 'reference' to someone's idea. You take it on, refine it, make your own changes and alterations, and ultimately make it your own. Make it work for what's in your mind rather than what was in someone else's. I think that without referencing what already exists, does a disservice to the piece being created, as it cannot be its highest/newest form. It would be missing out on a new level of creation. I love your rambles Nightly. It's like having a conversation with a good friend about anything and everything ❤💋

If no one went by reference and just memory, everything would look like those renaissance paintings ruined by modern 'touch-up' artists. (Edit) My art teacher in freshman year, (Who had a hook for a hand lol), she for some reason was very against reference and told us to look at a picture for as long as possible before shredding them. I guess it's a good way to try and have good memory, but it made a lot of students struggle.

I'll have to look into that then for Moana! I like to watch and try to learn how everything in that field is done. (edit) Re-reading your comment reminded me of something I saw about Steven Universe. And that was people a while back digging at the show for inconsistent art styles. I don't know why, but that made the show more charming to me how Steven would be hip height with some characters, but then be knee height the next episode. lol

This made my little artist heart happy!! 🥹♥️ the old rotoscope Disney videos are some of my favorite things! They still do it! The newest one I can remember is from Princess and the Frog 🥰 ACTUALLY!! Moana!! They used video references of Mr. the Rock for Maui! lol I love your art style!! Gravity falls and Steven universe were always my biggest inspirations 🥰

I always feel like the anti-reference squad is unaware of how visual art works. I mean if they'd taken so much as a high school art class, they'd be aware the first thing they do is sit you down in front of like, an apple, and tell you to get to it. In middle school they had us looking at our own left hands and drawing those. There are entire websites and collections and physical books just dedicated to pose references. If all people were actually totally shunning real life and digital references and drawing purely from imagination, I'm pretty sure it would wind up looking bad; anatomy is not that easy to figure out and to be honest neither are like.
