TGIF: What kind of Goblin do you want to be?

Hello and haaaaaaappy Friday, Patrons! How are we feeling today? I'm on day 2 of my monthly monster so I'm rocking some cramps, a cozy pair of gently stained sweatpants, and won't deny that I woke up and had some cake icing with my coffee first thing this morning! Weeeee! I think it's more than appropriate as I've recently learned that "goblin mode" has been announced as Oxford's word of the year. Two things. One, is that not two words? Two, do you think the people at Oxford have a petty rivalry with the Merriam Webster people? Oh, that's a probably boring reality tv show I'd watch at least one episode of. As I mentioned a couple podcasts ago Merriam Webster decided on "gaslighting" as it's word of the year and now we have Oxford swooping in with "goblin mode." If that doesn't give you an indication of the lazy, sloppy, stream rolling nature of our current culture I dunno what does!

According to Oxford, goblin mode is "the slang term is defined as a 'type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.'" OooOOO0oo000ooo. They continue that "it captured the prevailing mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to 'normal life', or rebelled against the increasingly unattainable aesthetic standards and unsustainable lifestyles exhibited on social media." Yeah, fuck the proverbial-and-literal-aesthetically-put-together man/person! The term struck a chord with people who "felt disillusioned by the third year of the pandemic and the ongoing political upheavals around the world." So, not only are we psychologically manipulating each other's realities with our incessant gaslighting, we've also straight up GIVEN UP. And here I am, in my filthy elastic waist pants, laughing at how sadly correct that feels.

But, I also have to acknowledge the potentially put together goblins out there that don't deserve to be lumped in with their fellow gross gremlin kin (their gremkin?). There's probably a small, under recognized community of boss bitch demons out there putting 100% into their IG brandings working overtime to get some aesthetic recognition - shout out to those high functioning freaks! 

But it's a pendulum swing, right? At least that's how I imagine it. We've swung into the woke wake up call and now we're all tired and rejecting anything that externally labels us or threatens to cross our internally established boundaries. No wonder we're so sleepy! That said, we're in that precarious time of year just before New Years where the motivation to make shit happen or get shit done wanes as we get to ponder how to best approach 2023. I don't know about you, but this always feels like the end-of-year-energy-purgatory. It's like my spirit just wants to hitch a ride on a sled to the finish of 2022 and conserve itself for what fresh hell/beauty 2023 might bring. Anyone thinking on their new year resolutions yet? Hit me with em if you got em! I haven't thought on mine specifically but o0o0ooo000oo do I love a good fresh start! The endless possibilities, the clean slates, the untainted hope of being a gracefully good goblin! What fun! So, what kind of goblin do you want to be next year? You don't have to know now but something to let your sweet, sloppy soul think about!

Let's see what else has been going on... I've been doing a ton of Christmas shopping this week. I've gotten family members everything from printed wedding photos (because we're cute), to slippers (because we're comfortable), to a ball to play with specifically when you're high (BECAUSE DUH). The "high ball" is a gift for Elliott's brother and its taken all of our self control not to rip it open and try it before we give it to him. We're practicing being polite goblins. Oh, also, quick tip if you're looking to get seemingly sophisticated and slightly quirky but cool gifts for someone ... I went down a huge worm hole this morning looking at the MOMA gift shop  and they have some great shit that'll make someone say "oh wow cool!...I think." Fun! 

Okay, I gotta run! We have a plumber coming by because us goblins have had a clogged toilet for three days! DON'T MIND US, JUST LIVING OUR BEST LIVES!
