TGIF: Big Trickster Energy

Hello and happy Friday, Patrons! I am on day 4ish of a head cold which has been a reeeeal hoot. It seems like a few of you are also sick/ailing at the moment so it's a germy Friday rager! Tis the season! High five! Sike, don't touch me with those nasty hands!

Speaking of the holiday season, I really need to start Christmas shopping. This is what I've said to myself for the last 4 days. I don't know why it seems harder for me to figure out gifts this year. Maybe because I have a tinge of cringe about getting people stuff (read: crap). Buuuuut, I also kinda love the game of trying to figure out what stuff (read: good crap) people might not know they could use or need or love? Anyone else get into it that way? To me, it's like a psychological puzzle game. You assess a person and their experience in the world to decode what might make their lives better, albeit in a practical or ridiculous sense. That part is fun. Until I find myself down the rabbit hole of wondering if anyone in my family likes Elvira enough to buy them Elvira's Salt and Pepper Shaker Boobs. Then I realize the game has gotten away from me. What kind of gifts are you going for this year? Any recommendations on interesting directions to take with it? I try to aim to get thoughtful gifts that are either practical, absurd, helpful, or hilarious-for-a-moment-and-it's-obvious-I'm-okay-if-you-get-rid-of-it-in-the-near-future. I think we all hate the feeling of someone we love getting us something we don't love but we pretend we love it because we love them. I write this after I cleaned my office yesterday and gently tucked an angel figurine my mom sent me for my birthday in my closet. Hey, the closet is not the trash! It's just a lil trash purgatory. 😬

I also just finished Elizabeth Gilbert's "Big Magic" this week. My first official non-school read! Woo! Some of you have probably already gobbled up this book, but if you haven't I definitely recommend! It's got a lot of really nice/easy thoughts and take aways for living a creative life and creative living beyond fear (literally what it says on the cover). It's the kind of stuff you read thinking you already knew that but somehow the easy tone she writes in presents it in a new way that sparks some freshness in the brain. At least that was my experience. Towards the end she talks a lot about 'trickster' energy, which is something I really honed in on in school - the trickster archetype is a depth psychological concept and though she doesn't call that out directly in her book it was kewl to see some of what I've mulled over the last two years being woven into pop culture self help stuff. The general ideas attached to it are about not taking things so seriously...about finding the playfulness, the humor, and the joy in relation to your own creativity rather than marinating in the heaviness we often attach to it. The trickster finds the game that is to be played rather than forfeiting before hearing all the rules (that they could most likely have fun breaking). It's a fun reminder to approach creativity with fun. Walking up to a scared dog with your own scared energy won't get that lil scrappy thing to come play with you. You gotta approach your own creativity/ inspiration pup with some treats of cheerful friskiness or literally a funny bone. It's apparently how I approach gift-giving too. Remembering to connect with your inner trickster was one of the many great take aways I had from the book, if you've read it let me know your thoughts!

Right when school ended I went on a self-help book shopping spree and picked up Big Magic and three different Brene Brown books. I've never read any Brene books but I love saying her same out loud. It's like a baby trying to say the name Renee. How fun. I think I'm gonna move on to one of those next and will keep you updated on the progress. Look at me go! Or, rather, look at me thinking about going!

What do you have going on today/this weekend? The rest of my day today is pretty wild, y'all. I'm going to be talking myself into a shower and MAKING MORE SOUP. Yes, I made soup on Wednesday if you watched lens and it was so good I got more ingredients and I will be making that same soup again today! If it ain't broke! And it ain't! *cut to me having immediately regretful diarrhea from too much soup* Let me know what you got going on and if you have any new TV recs. We hopped on that White Lotus train this week and CHOO CHOO we're off and the ride is so good! We started with season 2 and now we're (im)patiently riding this out before we go back and watch season 1. Jennifer Coolidge is a god damn national treasure. I think I could watch hours of her doing literally anything and mostly nothing. Ugh. She's so good! Anyway, the soup sirens are calling and it's time for me to cut (onions) and run. Hope you have great weekends! ❤️G

Just finished the turkey lentil soup.

I need to give that book a read. Have you watched Unicorn Store? That is my go to when I need a fun way to get back to my creative side

Can’t go wrong with Brennan Brown. Check out her TED talks and her podcast. Oh.. is Christmas coming? White Lotus is excellent, has everyone noticed that women are enjoying sexuality without the Double Standard raising its ugly head. Women having their unfettered agency, finally!

My weekend is full of supporting other people's Christmas gifts—that is, selling my handmade candles at the fall farmers market! It's been a lot of fun but I look forward to sleeping in on Saturdays again soon... Whew. Here's a little Buzzfeed-style personality quiz I made for my website if you want to find out what candle scent you are 😆 https://quiz.tryinteract.com/#/601908df8aded70016417a9f

Yesss white lotus! I figure you might appreciate this tweet re: last episode 😂 https://twitter.com/phukluzin/status/1597405580104060933?s=46&t=Z576ow2ekEqvd94nowiM0g I knit and bake so the last few years I’ve mostly been doing that for gifts. Last year I got too ambitious because I got a stand mixer with a dough hook and made bread type stuff for everyone—WAY too much work. I’ll just make some cardamom buns for my bf and I this year 🤌 I got a vintage Christmas knitting book from the library and already made a couple cute decorations for gifts, and I’m making a couple toy rockets for my nephews. (I mostly stick to small stuff for gifts or I get too overwhelmed haha.) i always have a lot of yarn lying around anyway so Christmas is great for hacking away at the yarn stash a little. I have a couple pie dough balls left over from when I made a pie a little while back so I’ll make some tarts with those for gifts!

You and Mamrie could make it a challenge to see who gets more books done each year haha

I’m watching with my roommate who wanted to start on season 1! I just started season 2 yesterday. I also thought it would be terrible but you just get sucked in so quick!

I somehow got my Xmas gifts all done in JULY this year and I'm trying to bask in how easy this holiday season is going to be because we all know this will never happen again. And all were gifts I know they'll love! HOW?!?! Also, jumping on this book club thing - maybe it could be a part of BAR flies? I absolutely love our book club sessions and want *more*, but I wouldn't want to pressure Mamrie with even more on her plate. Maybe we could switch off on who's hosting/choosing the book? As long as she doesn't feel like her toes are being stomped! I love love love BAR flies ❤️

Yes! I think of you whenever Christmas comes around especially the gifts with your face on it cause those are just genius

Are you watching the more recent season? It's an absolutely bonkers show! These last two seasons I've avoided watching it thinking it won't be good until I finally put it on and binge the entire thing in a day while looking up rumors on twitter and trying to find all of their social media accounts to see if I can figure out who dumped who. It's a treat!

That sounds so lovely for your family! Maybe bring the gift of poopourri since it's the whole fam in one cabin! Good luck on finals!

haha! yes! I LOVE going the personalized/handmade gift route! I think my family members have endured possibly too many sweatshirts/pillows/blankets with my dumb face or some stupid phrase on it over the years. But tis the season to start thinking of more ridiculous custom crap! Good crap!

I'll definitely consider a non fiction book club - I'll have to check in with Mamrie on her book club plans and see what might make sense. Also Elliott's dad has a respiratory infection too. I think he was the one that got me sick after Thanksgiving but he's my father-in-law now so maybe it's just a right of passage into the family lol

ha the flameless candles are what i got my mom for Christmas last year! Also, sorry but yeah the Vow will really suck you in! And good luck with your sickness, fellow sickie!

Great to hear about Brene's books! I think I might start with Daring Greatly and see how it goes. She's all about that vulnerability thing and that scares/intrigues me! Have fun with your mom!

Hey! I’m behind I know but I’m finally watching love is blind and omg it’s actually insane. I can’t believe it took me this long to finally watch it!

Hey there! Instead of doing gifts this year our family rented a cabin to spend the week of Christmas. But I did get my nephews an air hockey table and we considered getting my in-laws a smokeless fire pit! I’ll be spending the weekend wrapping the gifts I did get and studying for finals (yuck!) Get well soon!

I like to get handmade gifts for people that I KNOW they will love! First instance, my biggest brother loves the scene in the Casper movie where the dad opens the door and screams so I took a screen shot of the fathers face and got a custom made pillow. Or for my step mom I get her creepy half melted porcelain mini figures cause she loves creepy crap

Hi Grace! Your soup on lens looked soooo yummy, I think I may be inspired to make some too. This cold & flu season has been awful. All the kids at the school I work in are coughing all over the place (nasty) and I just found out my mom has a respiratory infection 😕 I hope you feel better fast!! Also, I second the motion for a non-fiction patreon book club!

Hey Grace and patrons! Happy Friday thoughts . I am one of those fighting sickness too. Made chicken noodle soup and still eating it. I watched The Vow because it was mentioned here last week, OMG just nuts. Still haven't got over that scary old lady statue wall thing!! Nancy made my brain hurt. I am currently on the Jennifer Coolidge White Lotus train too. She is a treasure. I have began Amazon Xmas shopping and can't believe how many funny salt and pepper shakers there are. I got the shark biting the leg for my brother. Lol I also love the flameless candles that look like real ones. I have been not been able to settle my brain enough to read yet. The last book I read was The Alchemist and loved it. Quick sweet read. Well back to resting and watch Hells Kitchen. BTW your Dilly Parton cake looked amazing. Have a great week y'all !! 😉🌸

Big Magic has been on my wishlist for ages and you just convinced me to push it up higher on that endless “to be read” list…maybe also a good Christmas wish even! I read Brené Brown’s “Dare to Lead” and loved it! I think it has kind of the same style you described (and that’s probably the case for lots of pop culture self help books) - kind of already known things put into a new easily digestible way that lights up some new sparks. Have you considered starting a Patreon book club? I know Mamrie has one already (kind of, sometimes at least lol) but maybe you could start one just for self help/non-fiction books for example 😍 My mom is in town so lots of family time which we’ll mostly spend shopping and eating and on too crowded but still beautiful Christmas markets! I haven’t gotten a single Christmas present yet. Thankfully my family always asks for certain things but I also like to add something surprising and more personal…if I can think of something at least… Feel better soon! I hope the soup and Dolly’s banana cake are helping!
