Whew! We made it, y'all! And it was a fight to the very end!
The finale episode had the queens writing verses on Ru's new country song "This Is Our Country," featuring country legend Tanya Tucker. TBH I only recently learned about Tanya Tucker when I watched the Netflix series This Is Pop...there's an episode called "When Country Goes Pop" and she's featured towards the end. It's pretty interesting and only 45 min if you're looking for something easy to watch. Tanya's story of success and failure and finding herself again after struggles with terrible relationships and addiction to be able to finally win a grammy in 2020 after 10 nominations is actually wild.
Anywhooooo back to the episode!
The queens all approach their verses about America differently...
Eureka goes the route of comparing/contrasting it to European monarchies .... which is an interesting way to go. From the epic tale of a shitty kitty last week to the shedding of colonial rule this week...that is quite a pivot! I appreciate her taking a risk and thought she looked faaaabulous in that purple pope finale runway look. It really was Vatican meets Vegas and I'm here for it.
Ginger, with 18,000 pages of notes about possible lyrics, ends up with a verse that I thought was pretty good. "Tis the tea" is such a fun line but the rest of it was maybe a little generic for how many pages of ideas she seemed to have? But that's if I'm nit picking! Which I guess I am! But Ginger is a consummate performer and was so easy to watch in the music video. HOWEVER, I am confused on her finale runway look. Anyone else? Just me? It looked like a Madonna 80s prom dress rather than the epitome of the evolution of the Minj? I feel like she showed stronger runway looks in pervious episodes. BUT, I guess that scrutiny is the burden of being "the most famous queen to come out of Drag Race" without a crown.
Kylie uses her lyrics to embrace and celebrate more parts of herself that she used to feel ashamed of. She doubles down on her twang and the Jessicas...giving us Jessica Simpson meets Jessica Rabbit. Her final runway look, albeit maybe a little more simple than the others, speaks up for itself. She wrapped her gorg body in the American Flag and took it back as a proud trans woman. Ugh, wonderful!
Ra'Jah I thought had the best lyrics out of everyone. She used her verse to call out the contradiction of wanting to be a proud American with obvious BLM concerns and I thought she did it really well! And then her finale runway was that insanely luxurious purple number...another Ra'Jah original and DAMN she better get all the fashion opportunities after this because she is TALENTED with the fabrics and the making of the clothings.
Then we get sweet speeches from each of the contestants and I thought they were all sincere, and heartfelt and eloquent and added to the impossibility of judging this finale. But then Ru has them lip sync individually and, though this isn't my favorite thing they do (I wish they'd go head to head), we still got some great moments out of it. C'MON SLIP INTO A PERFECT SOMERSAULT SEXY SLIDE, MISS KYLIE!!! I mean, that moment sent my jaw to the floor and back up again.
And with that, we have our winner....KYLIE SONIQUE LOVE! TBH I truly didn't know who would win, I thought they were all really great with no obvious flubs, fuck ups or fishy foolery. But I will say I'm insanely happy for Kylie! Her story is so inspiring and her dedication to her work and ability to be raw and vulnerable and continuously learn is the type of gorgeous humility you love to see! Also, she's sneakily hilarious...which I love. Whew that was a roller coaster...I feel like we've been watching this season for 84 years! Time for your thoughts! Let me know any and everything you think about this finale! Spill your tea/guts etc! Have great weekends, y'all! ❤️G
