So about that turtle, the main reason turtles head out onto land away from water is when they're trying to lay their eggs. When you see a turtle crossing a road you should always help it in the direction it's going, because it's headed that way for a reason. It most likely left the lake and went onto the road again as soon as the coast was clear. You guys had good intentions and this definitely isn't common knowledge so I'm not trying to shame you, just some information in case you come across one again.
