Happy Saturday, Patrons! How is everyone holding up? I, for one, am full of eggs and tofu chorizo so it’s anybody’s guess as to how the rest of my day will unfold! Speaking of things that sit questionably in my guts, we’ve reached the FINAL episode of Drag Race Down Under. Truly a season that has treated us as the audience like we’re riding a should-not-be-allowed-to-operate rollercoaster at a should-be-shut-down-forever Six Flags! Do they have Six Flags in Australia? I’ll tell you what they don’t have in Australia…a reliable handle on our precious Drag Race franchise! BA DUM BUMP (that wasn’t for comic effect those were just the noises my stomach is currently making)
Anyway! It’s time to watch the finale episode! Before I begin I want to thank you all, as always, for being a part of this ridiculous ride with me. I’ve treasured all of your thoughts, opinions and insider info as this season has unfolded and I’m happy we’ve all gotten to experience this mayhem (miller) together!
And off we go! We start our episode with our lovable and irritable struggle monster, Elektra sashaying away. In classic form, she leaves a shadily uplifting mirror message for Kita proclaiming she will be queen and that’s why she beat her. And Kita’s “it’s really hard to delete such a… bold truth” comment made me smile.
Now we have our top 3 plus Art, who hasn’t won a challenge and is still there by divine unexplained intervention. *shoulders are too tired to shrug* Scarlett has won 3 challenges so statistically she’s poised to take it, but this is Drag Race Down Under so you literally can’t bet on anything rational.
But before we lose our Alice-in-DownUnderland selves too deeply into that rabbit hole it’s a new day in the werkroom and we get some silly flashbacks of the season to remind us what we’ve all been put through. It’s stupid but I’ll take it.
We get our classic strange Rumail followed by Ru the male IRL. The maxi challenge is to collaborate with Ru on the song “I’m a Winner Baby” where they have to write their own verse and pull off some choreography. Surprise surprise. Quick side note, did I miss something or were there zero acting/comedy challenges this season? My brain has repressed most of the previous episodes but it feels like they’ve been doing a lot of singing and dancing? Oh well, it’s time for more singing and dancing!
But first, they get a video message from DAME Olivia Newton John and another woman that I don’t know but reminds me of a Kardashian version of that beauty guru that made that long ass crying apology video? Tati? Yeah, her.
After giggles and squeals, they get into writing their verses. Karen goes bizzarro Karen and wants to write lyrics uplifting the fallen queens. Meanwhile, Kita wants to sing her verse and when asked if she’s a singer she responds “I like singing.” *shoulders still too tired to shrug*
Then we get our Ru/Michelle interviews and first up is Scarlett. After a generic interview we get the generic talking points of not letting your ego sabotage you. Art’s interview becomes a slightly uncomfortable intervention about him needing to find people to take care of him or he’s going to burn out. I appreciate their concern and honestly but it kinda seemed like it came outta nowhere and was almost sabotaging Art’s mental state to continue the challenge??? *again the shoulders ugh* Karen’s interview is very clean and well spoken and touches on her mom and her lack of concern for boxing herself in with such a specific drag character. Kita’s interview gets another therapy session from Michelle and Ru addressing childhood trauma…which is very sweet and serious and slightly a lot but I just like Kita so much.
Time to shake off the trauma with choreo! Kita’s “I wouldn’t mind pivoting on that ball change” - love it! Classically, Karen isn’t good at dancing (aka swinging an invisible baseball bat) and Kita’s backwards body rolls are taking me to another dimension. Also at this point is anyone else feeling like they’re only using Art’s talking heads to narrate this ep? Kita gets thrown in every now and then but it feels like the Art show now that Elektra is gone. Is that foreshadowing?? Then Scarlett gets up there and does full Scarlett and asks to add a split to her number. *shoulders- nevermind*
It’s the final day in the werkroom and the queens have some heart to hearts post their Ru/Michelle intervention/therapy sessions. It’s sweet and bonding and also I learned the scope of Art’s Aussie fame (busses, campaigns, etc) 🤔 But it’s nice to hear their triumphs over their traumas.
Enough of that! It’s showtime! Ru looks like a gorgeous 80s prom queen and Michelle looks like a fabulous ghost that haunts the victorian house down the street.
Let the music play!
Kita: looks like Dolly meets Shakira and I think the singing fits the vibe (keep in mind I have no idea how to assess singing or vibes)
Art: She looks like Carley Rae Jepson on acid and I don’t hate it but it’s slightly underwhelming? But her makeup is glorious as always! Love the wild tongue/mouth stamp at the end
Karen: Giving me very Lawrence Chaney vibes…I don’t know why her verse makes me feel like I’m suddenly being hypnotized at a mega church??
Scarlett: her body looks amazing…but watch your drinks she might LACE them woof … her dancing was good but I expected more?
Overall I think they did a good job…the camera angles were kinda weird throughout the whole performance and sometimes Scarlett looked completely bored lol but there weren’t any *obvious* mistakes?
Runway time! Category is: BEST DRAG
Art: Wow Turn-POISED to take the crown? That makeup is CHEF KISSES!
Karen: Her body looks great, it’s a gorgeous look but those glasses again? I get it’s signature but I don’t know if I love them with that look? Has Karen heard of contacts?
Kita: She knows your secret, VICTORIA! Wow what a n angel! AND THE WINGS!!! WOW! I love how ridiculous it is!
Scarlet: Classy and gorgeous but compared to the others it’s a little underwhelming? Though that hair and makeup are STUNNING
Now to judging! They build them all up and even if it’s cheesy it still gets to my crusty heart. They talk to their younger selves and, again, even though it’s a little full on it hits some sweet spots, especially Kita’s. OUCH MY HEART. Then the classic why should you be crowned and TBH I kinda tuned out at this part lol. The judges say a bunch of words they’ve already said and then we get to the crowning!!!! Not to sound too much like Karen’s verse but I feel like we’ve ALL won by getting to this point!!!
But first they have to lip sync. Ah yes. I forgot. And they’re doing it one at a time. Ugh. I hate this. lol. I like seeing them interact and play off each other! I know the stage is small but eliminate two and let the top two lip sync against each other! This is like having the gladiators come out in the Colosseum one and a time to just sort of wave their sword around at nothing and then go sit back down. Am I overreacting? ha. What do you guys think?
We get the classic ONJ “physical” and wow…do they get physical. Kita has a full relationship with a rubber glove, Karen does Karen, Scarlett stretches every ligament she has and Art …looked beautiful.
And the winner is….. KITA MEAN!!!!!!! AHHHHH I’M SO HAPPY FOR HER!!!!!!! YES!!!! THERE IS SOME SENSE TO THIS PROGRAM!!!!! IT ONLY TOOK US GETTING TO THE VERY END OF THIS FRANCHISE TO FOR SOMETHING TO MAKE SENSE!!!
Ugh, adrenaline dump. Well, there ya have it folks! I’m so happy for Kita, I think she TOTALLY deserved the win. She’s got a heart of gold and a bag of tricks and she pulled it off fair and square! Whew. Well, I’m zonked! What’d you all think of the finale??? Gimme all your juicy thoughts and opinions! We did it, you guys, we got to the end of this season! I’m so proud of us! Now I’m gonna go give my brain a rest and read about depth psychology. lol. Have great weekends, y’all! ❤️G
