Alright y'all! I just finished watching the first episode of Drag Race Down Under and figured I'd write up a quick little post just to see if any of you have watched it? I watched it on the WOW app so I'm curious if more or less of you are able to see it? Regardless what a fun new season of bright eyed and bushy bushed contestants! (This post will be a little shorter than normal bc I didn't take as many notes during the episode bc I was genuinely enjoying all of these completely gorgeous goofy cartoon characters!)
First things first, I had to turn my closed captions on within the first 30 seconds of the episode. I thought I might make it further but when Art Simone walked in and started quacking about something something lockdown I truly had no idea what she was saying. lol It was so charming and excited and upbeat and made no damn sense to me! ha! God bless CC. Okay here's my quick rundown of their werkroom entrances/first impressions:
Art Simone: I LOVE her...that melty campy paint look was so fun and so well done...plus her voice is so fun even though I can't understand a damn word she says...still, cute!
Maxi Shield: She's 46 years old?? DAMN! GET IT, MAXI! I also loved that she described her drag as "a dickhead on stage"
Jojo Zaho: Wow these girls came to play! I love the art pop playfulness of everyone!
Elektra Shock: Okay yes, that wig was parched, starched and drier than Jojo's sense of humor but I like rooting for an underdog!
Scarlet Adams: Oh, g'day, Brooke Lynn Hytes
Coco Jumbo: That is some full body GLAM for the gods! love it!
Kita Mean: Who is this awkward Rainbow Brite? I love it!
Etcetera Etcetera: What a fun name that def won't get annoying to say almost immediately lol she's a glam bug and I relate to that HARD... it's how I feel whenever I get dressed up for anything
Anita Wigl'it: Wow who is this AGGRESSIVELY smiley Wiggles member gone rogue? AND she is a duo with Kita?? AND AND Elektra is their employee??? Well, okay storyline, here we freaking go!
Karen from Finance: Soooo cute and well done, but I wonder if that schtick will become one note?
And we have our ten contestants! How fun! Honestly, I LOVE all of their energy and enthusiasm already and their crazy cartoon voices just make it more fun. I can already tell I'm going to love this season. But before I can get too excited Ru walks in looking like every character on Scooby Doo smashed together and tells them their mini challenge is to audition for their new super hero movie, THAR .... intermixed with some weird and completely unnecessary cut aways from Taika Waititi? LOL I mean, what was that?! What an odd way to force a cameo? I was truly so confused the whole time.
But I digress! The queens all put on hilariously stupid performances...like, SO dumb. Ru forced them to have a lisp and also forced one of them to orgasm in front of him which is like SO beyond what I understand as appropriate anymore and perhaps we should consult with Karen in Finance to speak to HR? ha, but I mean, why not? It's episode 1 and I thought all of the queens performances were incredibly stupid and wonderful and it was hard to see any obvious weak links.
Elektra wins which is sweet to shake off the "employee/employer" dynamic out of the gate. Then we get my FAVORITE part of every episode one...when they de-drag and hunt for trade in the werkroom. And, to my surprise, our little glam bug was being a bit of a bitchy gossip bug and I didn't love that! I have in my notes "the roach is being a bitch already!" So there's that. Also does Jojo have detachable Bert/Ernie eyebrows? Or did I see that wrong?
Anyway, the maxi challenge is two runway looks....categories are Born Naked and No Place Like Home...which will be great because I don't know anything about Australian/New Zealand regionalisms! Okay, here we go! I won't go through everyone since that's twenty looks but some of my highlights:
-Scarlet: OKAY SO SHE'S STRAIGHT UP GAY NAKED RIGHT OFF THE TOP. Is this allowed on TV? Lol! I have been scandalized ....and titillated? Also Ru calling her a human flesh light sent me all the way down under! But I didn't love her swan look and the judges seemed to like it enough to put her in the top so maybe I'm missing something? She seemed a little stiff on the runway to me?
-Coco Jumbo's Born Naked looked like a Nicki Minaj reject monster from Monster's Inc. And then omg she's KING KONG...WHY NOT!? We watched Godzilla vs Kong the other night and the whole time I was wishing that Kong would have gone a little more glam in the film so this was nice to see.
-Jojo had great concepts and a beautiful cultural connection to the art she was presenting but it just didn't have the elevation/polish that the other girls were pulling off
-Karen and her glitter body suit with full furbie crotch was wonderful and totally the way I'd do this category ...if I was an Australian Drag Queen on season 1 of Drag Race Down Under ...Also Karen playing a straight white woman in her mid thirties falling drunk out of a pub made me feel ALL THE WAY SEEN...I loved that she's doing high class drunk camp - that's hard to pull off!
-Maxi looked like a sexy ziploc bag and then a sexy BIG ASS PRAWN and I'm here for it!
-Art Simone's two faced look is excellent...it's not the most original but it's executed SO WELL ... same for her tweed-dress-turned-street-art ensemble! Love it! She's got polish and I cannot wait to see more from her!
The rest of the queens did fine and landed them in the safe zone. TBH, I was thankful we weren't getting an Anita/Kita lip sync battle the first ep and they kept teasing us with it the whole time. Instead we get Elektra and Jojo in the bottom which is a bummer because I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Jojo's monotoned dry ass talking head commentary so much...and Elektra had so much promise winning the mini challenge. They go head to head in a Bee Gees battle because obviously. And WOW, I was so impressed for the first lip sync. ELEKTRA TURNED IT OUT, ON, IN, DOWN, AROUND AND THROUGH. When she did the second jump split I could feel my own crotch scream! She got a well deserved win and sadly we had to see Jojo sashay away. I really didn't expect her and her eyebrows to go so soon! But she should be proud of putting her heritage on display and representing her culture on the main stage. Bravo!
Okay, after episode one I'm kinda up in the air on who I'm rooting for. I love me an underdog story with Elektra (from one Elektra woman to another, I wanna see her surprise everyone!). I also love Karen from Finance but can't get a full read on her yet, and I do really like Art Simone and can't wait to see what kind of trickery she has packed. Let me know if y'all watched it and what you think??? Overall, I'm excited, they all seem cheeky fun and funny and no one seems to take themselves too seriously yet which is a great sign of a fun season to me. We'll see! Okay, enjoy the little bit of weekend that's left! Cheerio! -❤️G
