Happy Monday + Documentary Recs!

Happy Monday, Patrons! How's it going? Not too bad here. But today was on of those overcast work-all-day-under-a-weighted-blanket-kinda-days in LA. I dunno why but it felt like there was an eerie gloomy energy in the air all day. Anyone else have that going on today? Well, let's all shake it off with some documentary recommendations! We've been devouring docs features and series (and a sprinkle of reality TV) lately so I figured I'd throw them over here in case any of you are looking for something new! In no particular order, just however I could remember them...and descriptions based on whatever I remember them being about (note, edibles were occasionally a part of the viewing experience, thus descriptions might not be as good as they could 🙃)

Murder on Middle Beach: (HBO) It's a four part series on HBO about a woman who was murdered in Connecticut told through her son trying to solve the murder. This one is wild and all of the family members he interviews are real characters ...  plus all four episodes are available so unlike me having to wait A FULL WEEK between each episode, you can snatch them all up at once. It moves well and EVERYONE is constantly a suspect. Also, I learned what gifting tables are and WOWOWOW. 

Baby God: (HBO) We just watched this last night and WOOF. If you'd like to be shocked an angry and confused and then shocked again and AGAIN then this is a lovely doc for you. It's about a nefarious fertility doctor secretly impregnating his patients in the 60s through the 90s. BONKERS. I won't tell you anymore because basically I just told you the whole thing so I'll leave it at that and let you decide if you wanna go on that emotional rollercoaster! 

The Phenomenon: (We watched on Amazon, but I don't know if that's the only spot for it) This is the UFO one I think I mentioned on the podcast. It's about extraterrestrial government cover ups and what the true reason is that aliens might interfere and contact us and blah blah blah more alien stuffs. 

Close Encounters of the 5th Kind: (Amazon) This is the other UFO doc that (I think I mentioned on the podcast) was voiced by Jeremy Piven and generally aesthetically stupid looking at times, but under all of that it had an interesting message about encounters (of the 5th kind) with aliens. Lots of interviews with lots of people that either have or want to contact aliens. Fair warning I was pretty high when we watched this so no guarantees it isn't a total piece of shit. 

Heaven's Gate: (HBO) Now we combine apparently my two favorite content topics at the moment ... Cults and UFOs ... and you have Heaven's Gate! This one's about a cult from the 70s that truly believed a UFO was coming to take them all to "the Next Level." This one was FASCINATING, but I still have so many questions. Plus, the woman that was half of the duo that started the cult rubs me the wrooooong way. I'm still all fired up on account of the weird, secret evil she seemed to possess. Oooooh I gotta move on! But it was a great doc!

The Mystery of DB Cooper: (HBO) This one was unexpectedly GREAT! Apparently there was a guy named DB Cooper that hijacked a flight in the 70s and got away with it (I had no idea). He was never caught and this doc interviews people who were involved with people that claimed to be him. People...plural. Many people. Wild, you guys! I def recommend this one - I didn't expect it to be so fascinating. 

Hillbilly: (Amazon maybe?) This one was pretty good. Not my favorite but definitely an interesting watch. It's about the cultural stereotypes of the people who live in Appalachia, told by a filmmaker who lives in LA but is originally from the area. You also get a glimpse into the 2016 presidential election through the eyes of that area. Interesting, but sometimes frustrating, stuff!
