Discovering Warhammer 40k Episode 1: Selecting An Army

I'm not too familiar with Warhammer 40k, even though I've been playing TRPGs since the mid 1980s. As with all games involving miniatures it comes down to asking yourself what you enjoy most about the game. Are you drawn in by the painting, the strategy, the aesthetic, the idea of the faction, or the lore? The video gave me the impression that for you it's more about the lore and the idea over the other things and I must say I liked the way you summarised your thoughts on each faction. I know cost is one of the biggest hurdles in this game so I thought I'd say that I have several friends who play 40k and they love it. But they have long bemoaned the cost of official minis and because they were still at school when they started playing, they ended up creating their own using Fantasy minis and getting the weapons from war game minis. Nowadays they generally buy them from places like ETSY. They're not identical, but when they're painted in the faction colours they make pretty solid proxies. They're a good way to be able to field an army when you first start playing. If you start to get really into the painting it can quickly become a real money sink and an even bigger time sink, but as an occasional, very poor painter of minis, it's incredibly rewarding, frustrating and satisfying, but you need to watch some beginner guides on YouTube. I will say that Episode 1 has me eagerly waiting for Episode 2.
