AYSO/US Soccer State level Referee chiming in. Here is a quick and easy (well as quick as it can be) explanation about the Offside Rule. When a player is ahead of the second to last defender and receives a pass they are Offside. Most of the time the "last defender" is the goaltender. But not always. They also need to be AHEAD of the ball. So if there's a team breakaway and the teammate is behind the ball they are Onside. Also why it is impossible to be Offside during a Corner Kick. Because you are behind the ball when it is put into play. The timing of the foul is the most important part. The judgment is made when the ball is KICKED. In that instant, if a player is ahead of the 2nd to last defender and they participate in the play they are Offside. This also means that if the offense times it just right, they can be level with the defense when the ball is KICKED and receive the ball ahead of the defense making it appear they were Offside. It is also the only reason why the Assistant Referees (aka Linesman/Flag holders) exist. They do help with other angles and some plays, but their main job is to stay laser level with the 2nd to last defender. That way the MOMENT the ball is KICKED they can make the judgment. As often times it's only a matter of one step ahead or behind. Often times you will see people screaming because the camera (which is 50 yards away and at an angle) doesn't show what actually happened. So they see a player receiving the ball thinking they were Offside. The only person with the true angle of what happened is the AR who is literally looking down the line to see if the player is a step ahead or not. Also it doesn't count if the ball is headed or chested. Hence why KICKED is capitalized. Rebounds off of goalposts don't count either. Because the post gave them the ball, not their teammate. Being involved in the play is also crucial. Just because a teammate was ahead of the second to last defender on a breakaway solo goal doesn't make them involved. They can hang out all day next to the goaltender if they want. Just don't get involved. Hope that helps :)
