You're probably going to get people telling you about the deeper significance of 42, on some arcane meta level involving ASCII codes, different number bases, higher mathematics etc. In fact, Douglas Adams himself said that he chose the number specifically because it was the most uninteresting and inoffensive number he could think of; the kind of number you could safely introduce to your parents. So it's quite literally totally insignificant.
