Hi, new subscriber, I love your youtube stuff and saw you'd done threads so had to come over. There are two documentaries which are considered precursors to this movie, 'If the Bomb Drops" (1980) and "A Guide to Armageddon" (1982). Some of the effects in "A Guide to Armageddon" were reused in Threads. Both documentaries attempted to break down exactly why the UK Government's survival plan for nuclear war at the time was so woefully inadequate. I saw both Threads and the Day After when I was 12 years old in 1984, it was enough to spur me to join the PND (People for Nuclear Disarmament, the Australia branch of the CND) and start campaigning against Nuclear arms.

2024-11-05 20:06:57 +0000 UTCThis is a great piece of work, I think it still holds up amazingly well even 40 years later. It's so well produced, especially for a television film. It's a harrowing watch, and I can only imagine how much harder it must have hit back then, when the threat of nuclear war was so much more present in people's lives. I'm not sure I'd have wanted to watch it back then, that shit would have given me nightmares. Thanks for the reaction 👍

Saw the other comment mention When the Wind Blows. Haven't gone back to that that since reading it in English class over 20 yrs ago (I was 13-14), another one that stays with you.

The UK Government produced a pamphlet called 'Protect and Survive' it was a useless Government instruction booklet, because it was futile. No one or very few would survive. The ones that did would soon not! The government produced the pamphlet to all Households in the UK in the 80s with an information film as well. The information film is still on you tube.. I've included the link at the bottom of this page. My opinion on this ridiculous pamphlet and accompanying information film is that it was a futile exercise.. An absolute JOKE. The threat of Nuclear War is always with us when we have fools governing us. I would so much like you to do a Patreon reaction to a movie called 'When the Wind Blows'. Now this film is in cartoon BUT don't be deturred or put off by doing it. It's an excellent animation - well worth doing. I highly recommend it. It's by Raymond Briggs - the Author and cartoon artist that brought us The Snowman and Fungus the Bogey man. The soundtrack to the film is by David Bowie and Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd).
