“Who is Harold Saxon?” Who indeed. Alan, you know all these little callbacks throughout the season eventually come to fruition by the finale. Glad you enjoyed the episode. The actor, Mark Gatiss, who played Lazarus, is a massive Doctor Who fan and wrote the season 1 story, “The Unquiet Dead,” and the season 2 story, “The Idiot’s Lantern.” He also performs and writes as one of the main actors in “The League of Gentlemen,” which you’ve started watching. Gatiss, along with other Doctor Who fans, keep Doctor Who going when the show was off the air between 1989 - 1996, and then 1997 - 2004 (known as The Wilderness Years), by writing original Doctor Who stories which were published as novels. When Russell T. Davies brought the show back in 2005, he contacted some of these novelists and asked them if they would write for the show, which they were eager to do. Apart from Gatiss, other novelists were Paul Cornell (who wrote “Father’s Day in season 1) and Gareth Roberts (who would write a story in season 4).
