The Idiots Lantern is the moment where the best kind of historical story works out its formula. Taking a moment from British history of significance, in this case the now late Queen’s coronation, in the Empty Child it was World War 2 and the Blitz. Find a way to work in a scary cool science fiction mystery element into that setting, and in doing so take something from that setting and make it scary. In the case of this episode, it’s the TV and the fact that the 1950s were when it first became successful as a mass market medium. In the Empty Child, it was the familiar sight of the gas mask worn in the Blitz suddenly becoming synonymous with a danger in the episode. Funny moment where the Detective gets stunned by the Wire turning the image colour, Britain wouldn’t see colour television for another 14 years.

I was there for it when it returned in 2005, 6 years old I was, practically grew up with Eccleston and Tennant, bought all the magazines, had many of the action figures, I remember too those Frube yoghurts that had Doctor Who branding. I’ll never forget watching Tennant’s last episode, I was by then 11, Tennant’s portrayal of the Doctor had done much to shape who I was, my world views, attitudes in life etc, he was very much a kind of fictional father figure almost. I bawled my eyes out!

Due to the issues you had recently you skipped School Reunion, and I just wondered if you had any plans to go back to it, as it was one of my favourite episodes. It was the first of the new who to give a massive salute to classic who, and it was fairly important as it led to a spin off series. Would love to see what you thought ... :-)

I'm sure I've said this but my eldest son, who is now 21, was OBSESSED with Doctor Who, although to be fair he didn't get much choice in the matter🤣 And from the age of 3 he was watching the programmes every Saturday night, getting all the figures and acting out the episodes. Watching all these with you is unlocking so many wonderful memories of him I'd completely forgotten. Thank you💛💛💛
