Reaction to A Bridge Too Far pt 2

I think the allies felt they had no alternative to push through despite the huge human cost.

Thank you for this reaction. My grandfather was a Captain (The South Staffordshire Regiment, Unit B, 2nd Parachute battalion, British Army) and fought in the battle of Arnhem. He was awarded the Military Cross for his efforts. Unfortunately, he was killed. Here is the official nomination report. I thought I’d share: Captain Foot, Second-in-Command of "B" Company participated in the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. As the glider in which his commander, Major Cain, was traveling had been forced to ditch soon after take-off, Foot commanded "B" Company until Cain caught up with them via the Second Lift. He resumed command as the Battalion was becoming involved in the heavy fighting to force a path through to the bridge on Tuesday 19th September. Cain recalls meeting the now wounded Foot; "As I arrived I met Reggie Foot with his left arm around a man's shoulder and a pistol in his right hand, his good-natured face as red and cheerful as ever. He had a bullet in his left thigh and told me that John Phillp had also been wounded in the thigh or groin and was now safely in hospital. Reg limped off, back to the fight laughing, saying that he would be with me again in a couple of weeks.
